GPL and DETAIL ONLINE???

by schwab » Wed, 17 Feb 1999 04:00:00

Hi all,

I was wondering if this is just something I THINK I am experiencing or
if anyone else feels this way....

In order to get 36 fps all the time, I have to turn off nearly ALL
detail online. And when doing this, I can't seem to get anywhere NEAR my
best times in training with ALL detail on. I realize online and training
are different, but hey, when you're on the track by yourself online,
it's virtually the same.

Anyone else ever experience this? Or is it me?

I mean, last night I had to give up on a race being hosted at Mexico
(sorry Mike Carver) because I could NOT see the concrete tires until I
was ON them because with the detail off, the screen wasn't drawing them
fast enough. Any reasonable lap times there were simply out of the
question.

My current 261 MMX/8MB Thriller will be replaced by a 300A Celeron
system soon... all I need is the RAM and a few other goodies (already
have the SL32A and BH6). So I WILL get good framerates and ALL details
online soon, but not yet.

Any input is appreciated :-)

You maybe pushing your machine a little too hard.  Try to achieve 36fps
on the straights and allow the fps to drop in the 32's in some of the
busy corners.

There is a difference online than solo.  For some reason (depends on the
host and how many low latency & low frame rate players have joined), the
frame update isn't always as smooth online.  Even if your frame rate
counter is saying 36, you may still have some jerkiness and slowing of
the screen updates.

For those with a Voodoo2 card?  If so, you can use the glide wrapper
to set your mirror refresh rate down.  This will greatly enhance your
frame rate and still be able to use your mirrors.
