in jim clark's 'at the wheel' he spends a lot of time talking about
the von trips accident at the parabolica in '64.  sadly von trips and
several spectators were killed.

somewhere else i read that chris rea (yes, he of dubious musical talent
who's into motor sport quite a bit) funded/produced a documentary
about the accident.

anyone know anything about this documentary? ie. can i get hold of it.
i dont really want to see the accident footage, if there is any, but
the surrounding film/footage/info about racing, the reaction of the
press/governing body etc. to the accident would be interesting.

Don't know about a documentary, but there's this film he produced about a
kid growing up loving Ferrari's and watching the races on TV. They build a
replica of the 156 to get some race footage, maybe that's where the Von
Trips thing comes in. Anyway, in the film the young lad ends up discovering
a new flavour, thus making it big in the icecream business and ends up
owning a Ferrari. Only to dicover that the responsibilities involved in
owning one are too much for him. Or something. I don't remember the title,
but maybe you can jog the memory of the guy at the video store with the
storyline. That fat butler from "You rang M'Lord?" is in it.

Chris Rea's film is not a documentary but a full blown movie and
it's called "La Passione".

It's not a "documentary" Martin.  It is the culmination of Chris'
fascination with von Trips' life and death and, naturally enough, is called
"La Passione".
It features a replica Ferrari 156 that has featured at various Historical
events in Britain/Europe, powered as it is by a 2.4 litre V6 Dino engine.

If you track down the movie don't expect to see "accident footage, if there
is any, but
the surrounding film/footage/info about racing, the reaction of the
press/governing body etc."

It was in 1961, Italy GP. I remember that at least 14 people were
killed, and also Von Trips.

When Mario became the 1978 World Champion, much was made of the
parallels with Phil Hill's championship in 1961.  The only two
American's to be champions, and in both cases their closest competitor
in the points race was killed, and it was at Monza in both cases.  Very
eerie.  There were other parallels in the Italian legal witchhunts
after the deaths in 1961, 1978, and then (still not entirely done?)
with Senna.

What was Clark's role in this accident?  I remember once reading that
the officials wanted to blame him.  Or am I thinking of another
accident.

von Trips went off the track after he collided with Clark.  I recall reading
that Clark was in the slipstream of another Ferrari passing von Trips and
followed him through also.  VonTrips, not expecting the under-powered Lotus
to be up with the leaders, attempted to swing back into the slipstream of
the other Ferrari and hit the Lotus

In 1978, Patrese and the race director (Restelli, I think) were blamed
for the accident, even if after some years, they were released from
every charge.
The fact that there were investigations after those crash is because
of the Italian law.
About Senna's death, the 1st grade trial has ended, and nobody was
sentenced (hope that's the right word) for it. Anyway, there will be a
2nd grade trial, but it will take some time.
The investigations about Ratzenberger's death ended without a trial,
as it was clear that there was no one to blame for the crash.

I think there was some kind of investigations about that accident, as
there was after Peterson's crash in 1978, and after Ratzenberger and
Senna's accidents in 1994. An investigations is required by the
Italian law, every time there is a deadly crash.
