Rendition - is it worth it???

by Stev » Thu, 11 Dec 1997 04:00:00

i was thinking of buying a rendition card just to play nascar2. i
already
have a 3dfx orchid righteous but it doesnt sound too hopeful for a patch
any
more.
i have never seen the rendition version of n2 and was wondering if its
worth
to buy a 100 dollar card just for n2. it already plays at 30 fps for me
on my
system so it is just graphic quality and draw distance im looking for
here.
any help or any one who has a rendition please reply.  thanks...

is it posssible to take screen shots?? i would love to see some!!!

Worth it ?   Yes and no.  For $100 it is worth the added quality of video
from Rendition.   It just adds a little better depth perception in my
opinion.   However, it probably is not worth taking apart your computer,
installing new drivers for Windows 95, NT etc. just to get this benefit.
Also, the 3dfx card you have is probably better for most other games.   So
although $100 is worth the added video qualify - the total hassle is not
worth it unless you will experience added frame rate.

I would love to see some rendition screen shots as well if there are
any!

Ive held off purchasing a card for 2 reasons...   To see the Hercules
Thriller 3D and to see if a 3DFX patch really happens anytime before N3
hits the shelves!!

N3 will support 3dfx... so if you have $100.00 to spare and its worth it
to you to play in rendition mode for 12 months... then I would purchase
a card.  n3 will support rendition as well.  I cant wait to hear the war
cries when people start "discussing" which n3 is better.... Rendition or
3DFX.  ;)

well, i already have a fast 2d card with my 3d card.
no use buying a 2d/3d card when i already have a 4mb millenium.
is it possible to get an add-on card like the 3dfx, but get a rendition
one?
one that is rendition only, no 2d??
thanks for all your comments so far.

My .02 worth, It's NOT worth buying a Rendition just for N2, SODA and ICR II
IMHO, *UNLESS* you need a new video card anyway.

I was having some problems that all the tech support "EXPERTS" were blaming on
my STB Lightspeed 128, so I bought a Stealth II to go with my Monster 3D.

The combo worked great together (no conflicts) "but" the aforementioned games
didn't look that much better and SODA played SLOWER ( I don't know exact fps
figures but it definately wasn't as smooth) and as it turned out the
Lightspeed 128 wasn't my problem either (IE4 activemovie was).

The Stealth II went back. If you got and old "slow" 2d vid card paired with
your 3dfx card then a Rendition isn't a bad complement to it, if you got a
"fast" 2d card, SAVE YOUR MONEY!

Could I get a Rendition card and disable the 2D, so my Matrox Millenium
can handle that but still have Rendition in the games?

very good question MarkH.  i hope it can be done, other wise i do not
think i am going to buy one. unless of course i could sell my mellinium for
full price  :)
does any one in this NG know about MarkH's question, and also does any one
know what the windows 2d performance is of these cards compared to my 4mb
matrox millenium?

The Rendition cards are 2D/3D cards that replace your existing card.
Aside from regular old ModeX VGA, the 2D of the new V2100 and V2200
cards should be as fast or faster than the Millenium.  The V2200 cards
have a 230MHz RAMDAC (170MHz for the V2100) and come in both 4MB and 8MB
models, with either being a suitable replacement for the Matrox.

Personally, I would recommend it.  If you play it enough, that is.  For me,
it's worth seeing all the different details, making it seem much more
realistic and less "cartoony".  Just my opinion....--------Gid
