N4: Can't Connect to Multi-Player Race

by Ron Huettne » Tue, 27 Feb 2001 10:17:13

Hi All,

I have managed to get to the point where I can see all the races to join.
But when I try to join a race, I get an error message while connecting the
says, "Timed Out Opening Communications Channel".

Any ideas?

Sounds like your trying to join a race that has already started.

Some people do nothing wrong.
The problem is, they do nothing.
And THAT is wrong.

I got this same error message a *lot*... it sometimes took a dozen or so
tries to get to the "Welcome" in GPL's multiplayer screen, and even when I
finally got into the race I usually got cut off within 2 or 3 minutes.

The solution? I updated my modem drivers (duh!). Now I connect first time in
95% of cases, and disco's are few and far between. Try www.lagless.com for
starters.

Is this a problem with N4?  Do you have multiple TCP/IP devices in your
system?  If so you probably need to 1.0.0.1 patch:
http://www.papy.com/downloads/n4.1.0.0.1.exe

Note that after the patch is installed you'll also need to ensure that
you've selected the correct TCP/IP device to use in the sierra.com's
"Connect Via" drop-down list.

That's possible, though unlikely. A race that has already started will
usually give the message "Connections are not being accepted"
Not sure exactly what the problem is, but I get the same thing with some
servers in GPL and N4. Could be a high ping or a server which is overloaded
for bandwidth maybe ?

I do have multiple IP's so I downloaded the patch. But still no luck. Maybe
i'll see if I can update my modem drivers like someone else said.

Thanx for the suggestions,

Of the 3 IP choices, only one gives me the list of races on the next screen.
But I still cant connect to any particular race even tho I can see them all.
The timed-out message pops up pretty fast when trying to join a race.
