is that I don't have a problem with people downloading stuff. I don't even
have a problem with people sharing stuff. Anybody who really knows me here
*should* know that, but that's another discussion. However, on our network, we
can't allow people to share copyrighted files(that may make the university
liable), and I have to take any steps possible to prevent it. It's my job as
network administrator to ensure the integrity of the network. I've even told
students that we don't care that you download, as long as you're not using a
disproportionate amount of bandwidth. We don't penalize for downloading.
Sharing is a different matter.
I don't believe I ever told anyone here not to use BitTorrent, or condemmed
their use for it. I only stated that *I* hate the program, and explained why.
I got jumped on simply for stating my opinion. That's a little
disappointing(especially from some of the people involved), but it's an example
of the mob behavior we've seen in this group in the past. Based on some of the
replies, it was clear to me that most people weren't understanding my point of
view, and nothing was being accomplished on either side. Up to that point, it
was civil, but no one's mind was being changed. So I stopped my side of the
discussion, basically agreeing to disagree. Some random yahoo takes that as a
cue to attack. I respond to that attack, but somehow that makes *me* the bad
guy? I don't see that as being fair either, but live and learn, I guess.
