I also heard great news... Texas Motorspeedway is going to host 2 IRL
events per season through 2004!   Thats 8 races at Texas!

By looking at the crowd and TV ratings, that means about 16 viewers over
the next 4 years!!  Great deal for Texas Motorspeedway!!

I think sponsors could get more exposure sponsoring a Tupperware house
party than an IRL event!  Of course, they would probably recruit a few more
drivers too!  LOLOL

Throw around all the <VBG>s you want, Scott, but it doesn't change the
fact that yesterday's IRL race was some of the best racing that we're
likely to see all year.  Yesterday's attendance was pretty decent
considering that 1) Texas can seat around 200,000 people, and 2) That
was a RAIN-OUT crowd, returning for the second day, when rains where
still threatening.  Want to talk about CART's oval attendance figures
while we're at it?  Want to talk about CART's sponsorship woes, too,
while you're at it?  Don't pretend these problems don't exist for CART,
because they do.

Divisiveness won't fix open-wheel racing.  CART has a great product,
and the IRL has a great product, and eveybody will benefit if they can
find a way to work together, rather than at odds with each other.

Of course, with Mercedes-Benz potentially pulling the plug in 2001, and
with Toyota enjoying the halo effect of the Montoya/Ganassi win at
Indy, the IRL engine formula may start looking much more attractive to
the remaining CART teams and suppliers.

As you said, "LOLOL"

I'm sorry that Scott and the rest who replied to my post don't feel the same
way I do about that terriffic race Sunday at TMS.

I'm a race fan, I follow F1, CART, NASCAR, USAC, WoO and yes the IRL.

I live in the Dallas Metroplex so I'm lucky enough to get to see two IRL
events each season, and have met and talked with many, many of the IRL
drivers and teams.

All I can say is... Folks if you didn't think that was one of the best Open
Wheel races you've ever seen, then your either not a race fan, or are so
blinded by your hate for the IRL that your living in denial!

As for attendance.... If you weren't paying attention this race was rain
delayed from Saturday night, and it was raining cats and dogs on Sunday
morning in Dallas. We watched the local weather radar and decided to take a
chance and head for the track. It wasn't until we got about 15 minutes away
from TMS that the rain let up. Frankly, I was VERY surprised that they were
able to get the race in at all!

Now....

That's all I'm going to say about it... Let's get back to the business of
talking SIM racing, and not turn this into a lengthy debate, ok?

If you want to talk / argue the merits of the IRL and yesterdays event, I'd
check out the Indianapolis Star/News newspapers website, and go to the link
for their Speednet racing forums:

No offense, but you started your thread "For all you IRL bashers.."  Well,
don't be surprised if we respond to your post ;)

I did catch the last 10 laps or so and the side by side racing for the win
was very good, clean racing.  But its no different than watching Saturday
night racers in a great close race.  That doesn't make them a top tier
division or league.

Okay, I'll give you that one.  <G>

So where is it you live again?  I'd love to see those Saturday night
racers in your area who regularly that kind of close racing at OVER 200
MPH.

<VBG>

BTW, did you hear about Cheever winning the IROC event on Saturday,
making him the first open-wheeler to win since Little Al way back in
1997?

Artificial Competition:  The use of rules and/or equipment to force
passing, multi-race winners and make the talent of participants appear
equal.  It is used to make a competitive series.  The best drivers
rarely win.

This is something that the IRL is good at doing...emulating NASCAR.

It makes me sick to my stomach when series like the IRL brag about
lead-changes.  LEAD CHANGES DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN IT WAS A GOOD
RACE.

CART does not use this kind of ***on road courses.  And until 2000
did not use it on short ovals.  When Michael Andretti wins at Mid-Ohio
or Alex Zanardi wins at Road America, I KNOW who the best driver was
that day.  I don't care if there were zero lead changes.

Fact remains.  The talent is in CART.  The ONLY thing IRL has going for it
is Indy.  I think the results of this years race speaks volumes in terms of
the talent issue.

AND... there is no doubt the CART/IRL split hurt both series and a unified
series is needed.  However, I really can't see it happening as long as Tony
George is in control of the IRL.

I have a hard time understanding all of the series bashing here.

IRL, CART, Local Track, who cares?

The racing at Texas was fantastic.  I could care less about
arguing who has the greater talent, I watch the racing action.
And what I saw Sunday was very good racing.

Maybe I'm different in that regard.  Hell, I visit a local Go
kart track two or three times a month to watch 12 and 13 year
olds race, because they put on a great show.  Now, I'm sure that
they have less talent than Montoya.  However, they race the
wheels off of those Karts, and that's what I go to see.

Bashing a particular series isn't going to change anyone's
mind.  And like it or not, the IRL and CART will probably never
see eye to eye.  But, loyalty to one particular series shouldn't
ultimately cloud your judgement of good on track racing.

Maybe not 200mph, but have you ever seen a Super Modified event up here in
the east ???   Open wheel monsters with HUGE HP numbers going wheel to
wheel on fairly small tracks.  AWESOME racing.  That doesn't make them a
national top notch touring division.

My point was you can have some great racing, that doesn't make you a top
touring league of motorsports.

Yeah.. and the IROC is such a top notch way to evaluate talent ;)   I'm a
NASCAR fan and even I can admit that one!
