Th e main reason that you cannot install the MOD is that the RSDG guys
forgot to include the setup.ini in one of the zips/rars. Untill they
do that they suggest you use the included .msi file, a "windows"
installer, instead of the regular "setup.exe". But that needs the .NET
framework in order to function, so there you go. Here's my story, it
will probably strengthen you in your believe not to touch your install
I have been battling with my PC system since saturday night. I was
eager to test those sportscars in this Lemans weekend so I wanted to
install the .NET framework, passed by the Windows Update site, thought
I'd update everything since I was here anyway, then restarted and my
PC kept crashing Explorer (that is Windows Explorer) at the desktop. I
do not have a clue as for why.. Thus, I tried a reinstall over the
existing WIN98, it didn't work. So I rescued some files here and there
and got underway with a fresh, cleanly formatted install of WIN98.
After the usual batlles with drivers and plug and pray cards it seemed
to work just fine. Except for, when I try to install my Microsoft
Sidewinder FF Gameport Wheel, it crashes at the setup screen.
It refuses to start the setup and immediately gives me the "performed
an illegal operation and will be closed" routine. Again, I do not know
why, I have had no problem whatsoever with that wheel for the past 2
years and now all of a sudden, the setup will not launch.
This of course has nothing to do with the Sportcar Mod, it probably
has to do with obscure Microsoft alchemy in the depths of the system,
but, I only give this as an example of how one thing can lead to
another and before you know it you are not racing at Lemans in a
sportscar (that's what I set my mind to this weekend) but you are
sweating away reinstalling your system and cursing at Bill gates.
Anyway, within a few days these guys will come up with a setup.ini and
you will not have to pass through the website of update hell
