Early last year I upgraded to an AMD 1.1ghz chip/MSI motherboard.
Unfortunately the MB died and I sent it in for repairs...(most of the old
hands may remember all this)  Anyhow...when the board came back several
months later, I quickly re-installed the chip and heatsink.  I blew it...big
time and put the heatsink on backwards.  The poor chip lasted about 3
seconds before it burned up.  Well back the the ol P III 500.  I've been on
that system since then.  Even used the motherboard and memory for another
system I built as a gift..(that's a long story but I owed the guy a system)
So Here I am with a fried chip, and a system that is rapidly getting old old
and older.
A tech guy here in town said I should call AMD even tho it was my fault
the chip expired...sure enough, just got off the phone...cuz it was a retail
box chip they are gonna replace it....That's great!
now I gotta find a new motherboard and some more memory...
Dave Henrie
ps..I just looked at the original invoice when I bought that AMD
1.1ghz...OUCH!  I wonder if they will send me an 1800+ since that's about
the going rate for those now.....

Go for the Iwill KK266 Plus motherboard - it's awesome in every way (except
that it doesn't use DDR memory).

I just ordered an AMD XP1600 chip, Epox 8KHA+ motherboard (ddr), and 512 mb
of pc2100 ram from Crucial.

This will be my first AMD chip, finally making the switch after*** with
Intel for several years.

Check out newegg.com, they have some great selections, prices, and very good
service.

Dave I just put together my first AMD powered rig and it is awesome. I
purchased the XP1800+ along with an EPOX 8KHA+ MB. I highly recommend this
board. After you update the bios the MB is great. It has many features along
with the 266A chipset. Check out the reviews on it, you will not be
disappointed.

I placed my order over the Thanksgiving holiday. Immediately, I had an order
confirmation with order number. Within 10 minutes I had another email
stating my charge card had been accepted, and the order would be processed
and shipped asap.
Yesterday, first business day after the holiday, I get another email stating
it had shipped along with Fed X tracking number. Nothing backordered.
So far I am very impressed.

Wow, didn't know there were so many fans of this mobo :)

good news for you Dave, that's great customer support. I wish it were
like that here in Australia, most people prefer an argument first :P

Oh yeah. I wouldn't hold my breath for an 1800+, they're never that
generous :( At least you got something for free that you were never
expecting :) Maybe you could arrange that they'll upgrade whatever
they were sending to something newer for a few dollars more???

Is that 1.1ghz still in production? "Early last year" Hmmmmmm........ Maybe,
keep yer fingers crossed.

I love hearing about this AMD Heat/Frying stuff, heh my P3 866 has been
pretty much on 24/7 since I put this box together in March 2001.

Just another jab from an Intel diehard. he he.

Yeah it was pretty much my own fault.  They have a big indention cut in
the plastic frame that clearly indicates the ONLY way the Heatsink can be
installed, yet for some reason I got tunnelvision on the springy metal clamp
and chose the end that 'looked' familiar....so by the time I got the HS on,
it was tilted and barely making any contact at all with the chip
surface...Cooked real fast.

The VIA 4in1 drivers actually work flawlessly on the 8KHA+ which is more
than can be said for the crappy, overrated ASUS A7M, A7V etc.

When I get my new 8KHA+ up and running, will I need to update these via
drivers?
