RACER.com says that SEGA has gotten exclusive rights for CART.  I thought Papy
got it up to 2001?  What's going on?

God bless,

Hopefully they didnt cause SEGA wont do a damn thing with it.  Look at Daytona.
They made one game but still hold exclusive rights.  Frankly SEGA is starting
to***me off with that one.  But this is all IMO.

My question is, is Sega just doing this to frustrate the ***outta Papyrus and
their fans? Please excuse me while I go and take some tranquilizers.

I doubt that Papy ever had exclusive rights, didn't Microsoft release a CART
sim in 1997 (a pretty bad one too)?

I hear that.  Knowing SEGA, they'd probably get an exclusive cart license,
then make a side-scrolling action/fighter in the infield of officially
licensed and unrecognizable racetracks.  Somebody slap them, please.

Oh God, here it is...Sega just released this press release..brace yourselves:

Today SEGA OF AMERICA announced and previewed its newest titled on the fabled
Dreamcast Console. The title, CART Fighters, is based in the year 2000 after
the Y2K phenomenon strikes and racing comes to its knees. In this game, you
can control a variety of drivers from the 1999 CART Fedex championship series
rosters, from the on track loose cannon Paul Tracy, to Alex Zanardi's
replacement driver, Juan Paul Montoya. Due to the collapse of racing in this
game, CART supposedly reforms into a *** slugfest to fill the void. Using
the converted infield of tracks from the CART series, drivers fight it out to
the death with an impressive arsenal at their disposal, including airguns,
carjacks, and gas cans. But what fighting game would be complete without some
really cool moves? One previewed move was the secret magic attack of Michael
Andretti who summons the forces of ancient spirits to send a storm of Goodyear
and Bridgestone tires slamming into their opponents.

"We're very e***d about this title. It is an honor to work with such a fine
organization to use their name and the likeness of their drivers. We don't
have any plans to create the likeness of the surrounding tracks, nor do we
have any plans to include any cars, but we feel that this is of no importance
to the average, mild mannered gamer who's just looking to beat the ***outta
of an AI opponent." said a SEGA representitive.

CART Fighters is due out some time during the third quarter of 1999.

Well, that's it. Damn that SEGA. (And for those who are still reading, this IS
a joke. <G>)

Yes they did and yes it was pretty bad.  Along the lines of Indy Racing by ABC
Interactive.  The upside to Indy Racing is it has the feeder tracks and USAC
Midigets, Sprints, and Silver Crown.

Maybe I read the press release wrong but isn't the Sega license for console
games only?  And isn't the last Papyrus game license only expire next year
(i.e there's still time?)  This is what I'm keeping the faith on, until
someone in the know tells me otherwise.

Face it guys. We're getting screwed over here. Indycar just doesn't sell enough
these days. And it probably won't ever sell again untill George is assasinated.
NASCAR has taken over American Auto Racing. It is a shame that SEGA is allowed
to pull this crap. They pay millions of dollars for liscensing rights and then
they just***with everybody. I mean, isn't DAYTONA embarrased of the
products that SEGA has put out? SEGA is surely not a formidable representative
for American Motorsports.
God Damn you George. You have to realise by now that the IRL is no more than
just the minor leagues for CART. I'm surprised that the fatality rate for the
IRL is so low. It's very sad that America's foremost racing facility is doing
this to us.

Now, I have no idea of what I'm talking about. So please enlighten me
Thanx

Uff, I snipped the important part. Of course, schwabe and me were
talking
about CPR, NOT Papy's ICRx...

I could argue all day with you on the IRL and CART, but that is not for this
newsgroup. But I will agree with you that the lost popularity in the sport
of open-wheel racing is probably a major reason why Papy did GPL rather than
ICR3/CART2. And yeah, Sega must have been out of their minds to produce the
most successful arcade racing game of all time.

I speculate differently.  Papyrus chose 1967 Formula 1, for 2 reasons...

1) The "glory" of this period of racing.

2) As a working product to test, show off, finance, their new physics
engine in a model that wouldn't require the aerodynamics required for
CART cars.

I think Papy made the proper choice of Grand Prix Legends (see #2), then
NASCAR (put money back into the coffers) so they could then afford to
give us CART.  Also, with NASCAR they can work on adding some of the
aerodyamics (which is why they were probably working on Reno Air),
saving the full requirements for CART when all of the pieces could be
put together.

Of course this is pure speculation.....

I'm sick of all this speculation. Why can't these *** companies give us an
honest answer for once. I have e-mailed Sierra and Papy many times over the
years and I could never got an answer out of them on anything. They wouldn't
even answer my questions about products that have been released already,
nevermind their future intentions. They keep telling me to read the game's FAQ.
And SEGA is even worse. They ignore all my e-mails completely.

And was it really so hard to release an add-on for ICR2?
