Is the #28 cursed?

by DTP » Sun, 09 Jul 2000 04:00:00

It seems as though every driver that has been behind the wheel of the #28 car has suffered some form of trajedy. Davey
Allison, Neil Bonnett, Ernie Ervin (still alive, but by rights should have died in that testing crash years ago) and now
Kenny Irwin. Ricky Rudd better start carrying a rabbits foot in his pocket at all times, keep looking over his shoulder
and sit with his back to the wall. It doesn't look good for him...

My condolences to Kenny's friends and family, whom I'm sure loved him very much and will miss him even more. I know I
will...

I have a terrible memory. In fact it's so bad that I can't remember how long it's been since I've forgotten anything.

Don't know about cursed (although this is a terrible list of disasters) but
superstition can certainly be seen elsewhere in this sport.

In Formula 1 for many years now, the #13 has not been allocated to any car
or team because it was deemed to be unlucky.

It goes back farther than this--Fred Lorenzen, probably the guy who first
made the number famous, had a horrific crash in the car that ultimately led
to his premature retirement.  Offhand, the only longterm driver of the car I
can think of to suffer no serious damage is Cale Yarbrough.

I dont think the 28 is cursed.  Just a little coincidence but cursed is
probably pushing it...8*)  I hope anyway!!

Remember though that Dale Jarrett drove the #28 for a while and has had no
problems...(I must admit though, I was thinking about a "curse" on the car
yesterday)

Fred Lorenzen
Buddy Baker
Cale Yaroborough
All had very good years with #28

Irwin was brought into WC too early (in my opinion). And sufferd
from this.

Allison bought a much too powerfull helicopter and had few hours
of instruction on how to handle it.

Ditto Adam Petty.  How many times did you see him rack up his BGN car?  But
when he crashes a Cup car it's the track's fault?

I haven't seen anybody mention that Kyle Petty drove the #42 for years--now
I think *that's* spooky.

<snip>

Yeah, Lorenzen had two or three good years in it--and damn near got killed
in it, too.  I think it was in '68 or '69.

Sorry, daxe--Adam crashed and died in his BGN car.  I don't think he ever
bent up a Cup car, and he only raced in it once.  The engine fell out of it,
but he brought the car back in one piece.

I do agree he probably needed several more years in Busch.  It is pretty
amazing how many times they had to pour the car back in the trailer rather
than drive it on.  I would have liked to seen him run the trucks a few more
times as well (he did that two or three times).

I stand corrected.  Now that I think about it, of course you are correct.
WC weren't at NHIS that weekend (doh!!)

Yeah, you usually need to at least distinguish yourself in a lesser series
before they try to stick you in a cup car.  I think he may have been partly
the victim of his name.

Not '64 for sure--but I'm pretty sure it was at Daytona.  Car went airborne
and fliprolled several times.  I still think it was '68 or '69, maybe '67.
I've always thought the crash was responsible for Lorenzen's retirement,
although I don't think he's ever said so.
