Can anyone tell me how to make screen shots from GPL? I've seen shots of
both action and the newspaper so I know it's possible but I can't reproduce.
I've tried PrintScrn and Alt-PrintScrn with no success. I just get a black
frame.

Ideas appreciated.

What rasterizer are you using?  The Alt-PrintScreen and PrintScreen
methods will work for the Software, Rendition, and 3dfx rasterizers.
However for the OpenGL rasterizer you'll need to use a 3rd party screen
capture program.  I'd recommend HyperSnap-DX:

I use the OGL rasterizer and I have done a screen dump of the newspaper
clipping at the end of the race.  I just hit printscreen when the paper was
up, then left the game, pasted the image into Word and printed it out.  It
was fine.
