Here's something for Papy to consider that, from an ignoramus'
standpoint, doesn't seem too hard to implement.  It would recognize
all the fantastic work the *** community has done to improve and
expand on their great sim.

1.  Add scrollbars to the Best Laps page so more circuits can be
included.  Exported results would reflect additional tracks too.

2.  Add scrollbars to the World Championship menus so more than 11 GPs
can be added to the schedule (gp.ini).

3.  Allow for more cars in the field.  The computer muscle exists now
to comfortably run a field of 19 AI at full frame rates, so why not
boost the field to some # like 24?  Historical accuracy doesn't need
to be adhered to that stringently (and if it did we'd be racing
Bugatti).  Besides, Silverstone had 21 entrants so there's a
precendent for at least 1 more. <g>

4.  Enable F2/F3 world championship modes (this currently isn't
possible from what I gather).

5.  Allow for an entry in app.ini (or wherever) that will allow a
custom # of car makes so drivers can be assigned BT20s or BT24s, for
example.  This one is perhaps not achievable easily.

I think it would be really nice to see Papy come out with something
like this - a patch to improve existing code without requiring
significant retooling of the game engine (except perhaps for #5).

Just my thoughts after *** around O'ring.

Good points Bill - I've often wondered why the game is half oriented
toward adding new tracks/cars, yet half-not.  And if Papy are taking
note, they could give us editor's a break and ADD DEPTH BUFFERING !!
Jeez what a pain it is without it :-(

6. Manual controls over the cameras!

Four cars in a line and my camera is trained on the first. In order to
focus on the last car, I have to click through all the others in order.

My camera is focused on the first of eight cars.  The third car spins.
In order to focus on the spinning car I have to not only click through
the second car, I also have to click through the cars that pass.  Then I
have to be sure to stop clicking when I reach that spinning car.  I I
don't, I'll focus on a car that's on the other half of the track and
miss all the action with the spinning car.

I could just use pause and click to that car but I'd rather see it as
it's happening.  Maybe give us a Joy Stick controllability for each
camera?  All we would need is Zoom, Pan L/R, and selecting the next or
previous cameras.  Forward/Back for Zoom, Left/right for Left/Right, A
Button for the next camera and another for the previous camera.  And
maybe a keyboard key to select between the "AI camera man" and "User
control"

Of course this also would be a whole lot to code in...

all very good points....probably none of whoch we will ever see as my
undstanding is GPL is not on any list - let alone a prioritized one!
but as long as we're wishing :)

since many online leagues ALLOW shift-R durning a race, that in my
opinin is nothing more than a CRUTCH (if you can't control it SLOW
DOWN)
anyway...have a tally keeper. for each shif-r add 10 seconds (+/-) to
your time that would show in the final standings....

Kirk Lan

Simple GPL patch request?

IIRC, that's part of the name of the hacked-up LeMans-Bugatti track that
really hosted the '67 French Grand Prix, but it generally sucked, so Rouen
was chosen in it's place...

Some stuff I'd like to see in another patch:
*Currently, you can host a race and have people join from the internet,
dial-up, and LAN.  Why not add in 'proxy' joining - i.e. someone on
broadband (it'd be too slow for 56k) could join a netrace, then people on
their LAN could also join through them...
*A TRACK EDITOR.  PLEASE!!!  (OK, that could be a separate release)  While
I'm on the subject, some tracks I would love to see:
**LeMans - the one they race for 24 hours!
**Modern and semi-modern F1 tracks (like Hockenheim, preferably
sans-chicanes, and the late-80s-early-90s Phoenix street course)-
could be done with a GP2->GPL convertor, but that'd be hard to code

That, and I would love it if Sierra/Papy would come up with a way to add
whole seasons/different series to the GPL game...just adding new tracks,
graphics, and carmodels...

This would be very handy.

Even a utility to automatically write "best lap times" for the new tracks
to your player.ini file would be very nice.

Probably not possible, but it could be a challenging project for some
very clever person ?

It would do fine (for me, at least) to allow the user to assign numbers to the
cameras around the track, and letting the user select them, so the user would be
able to "follow" the field just as a director for TV would.

That's what I was getting at.  The more control we have, the more of a
director we could be.  I have a couple of online races saved to a VCR
tape.  It took a lot of tinkering and planning before I finally started
to tape the replays.  Because of the limitations of the cameras I have
some footage that I wish wouldn't have to be there.  Of course I could
just further the whole thing by editing the VCR tape, but the less I
have to spend, the better.  I have started to edit the camera files for
better and more realistic views, but the limitations are still there.
