When you select automatic detail, GP2 estimates a graphics and frame
rate setup, which suits your computer. This is only done once - it is
not an active function which adjust graphics during gameplay.

: The auto detail doesn't seem to work in the same way as ICR2. You select
: a frame rate with the + and -, and then click on Automatic. Then when you
: eneter the sim it will give you details that will supply that average
: frame rate. The textures do not flick on and off as you drive.

This is true.  I tried it last night and I an also change the automatic
setting, or at least the results of it, by mashing ALT-D.

GP2 rocks the manual is a little lacking in explaining how to set it
up but what else is new. Too bad you took it back as it runs with all
the graphic options except sky on my puter (166) fast fast fast. But
you do have to know how to set it up. Its not intuitive.

So, not the game, but your computer "sucks" :-)

How can you say that the manual lacks explanation on setups. Appendix C and D
cover this topic to the full.

Sorry I  wasnt clear but what I meant is the manual doesnt explain how
the graphic options work very well. Sort of skipped the part about if
you set desired framerate lower than estimated the sensation of speed
will be better because of the lower Processor Occupancy.

It seems too obvious that the manual was written well before the game
was finished.  It is very hard for the author of the manual to
anticipate what will and will not be in the game if he has to finished
the manual half a year before.   (it did print 1995 on mine)

This game is too much self exploring.  It's almost like an adventure
game.

BTW, does anyone know how to use the 4th to 7th set of types in a race
weekend.  I normally just run a 1 or 2 stops race, so I always waste a
set of tyres!!

I bought this game yesterday . I have a
486Dx2-66 with 16mb ram. Although it's slow i can
still play bits of it and those bits are awesome.
Undoubtlably the best game. I didn't like that
microprose did a Windows 95 job and made everyone
require a new machine. But now i reconsider and say
it was worth it! Cause it's a bit slow i don't
think i've used it to the full advantage. But i
love it. With GP1 and now this all my Gping dreams
come true. I also got a phamplet about some
software they'll release that lets you build tracks
and all that should be just as much fun!
My one question is that Microprose
advertised this game to include changing weather
conditions but there's no reference to this
anywhere except during the track description of Spa
where it is mentioned about changing weather
patterns. But no details about the game. I felt
that driving on a dry line on a wet track would be
the ultimate but They have dissappointed me (only
slightly) about this. Cause it's the beta version
will this be fixed and if so how will i upgrade it.

So from one Slow GP2 player to however many
others there are.. Keep on Truckin' ahh....
racing!!!

Maybe I misunderstood you but are you trying to run this from WIN95?
If so you can get more speed by not doing so. Run it from DOS, it and
you will be much happier. Great sim isnt it??

Use the extra set of tires to do a mock race run during a practice session, or
if you need an extra bit of speed during qualifying you have that extra set of
"sticker" tires handy.

For example, during my race weekend at Brazil, here's what I did with my seven
sets of tires while trying to learn the track:

Friday practice:  1 set of sticker tires, 35 laps; 6 laps to get a qualifying
setup, 29 laps to get a race setup
Friday qualifying:  3 sets of sticker tires, 3-5 laps each
Saturday practice:  2 sets of scuffed tires, used from the Friday qualifying,
to work on qualifying and race setups
Saturday qualifying:  3 sets of sticker tires, 3-5 laps each
Sunday warmup:  1 set of scuffed tires to work on race setup
Sunday race:  3 sets of scuffed tires with only 3-5 laps on them, two-stop pit
strategy

Now, when my championship season gets around to Brazil again, I can probably
save up on sets of sticker tires for the race because I'll have a pretty good
car setup by then.  However, since this was my first time at Brazil and had no
setup to work with, I had to use my seven sets a little more heavily to get the
feel and setup for the circuit.

I'll probably be using this same routine at the other tracks too, unless I can
get competitive times right away.

Along the lines of the lacking manual.  Anyone know what verges and
hills are? None of the graphics options are explained in the manual.
I gotta turn a buncha stuff off to get it smooth as I like it on my
P5-100 and it's hard to decide what to turn off.  OH, except for
Monaco, there you just turn off everything :)
