NR2003 T/A Road Course AI

I have been under the impression that the NR2003 AI wasn't too hot on the
road courses. I bought it for the T/A patch and the converted tracks, so I
didn't expect much from the AI as Papy wouldn't have created them for this
combination.

However, I ran two races at Kyalami and Cleveland last night and had two
fantastic races. Lots of side to side racing at Kyalami taking several
corners to finally pull off the move. At Cleveland despite the width of the
track getting off the racing line really compromises speed making it really
hard to get by. Again lots of side by side stuff and where the AI would
give up in GPL they will race you fairly and hold you up.

I had imported a load of touring car skins, so I had to fiddle with the
ratings to get them up to speed. Maybe I found some magic numbers. In GPL
you were either overtaking or defending, seldom both in the same race. In
these races there was a lot of overtaking going on with the AI and whilst I
was battling with the car in front the guys behind would catch up and be on
my case. Great stuff!

I was well impressed. It seems like the work going on with the converted
tracks and AI utilities are right up to speed. Perhaps more effort is being
made by the third party community on teh road courses?

Was I just lucky or are others having a similar blast with the T/A AI on
the converted tracks?

Cheers
Tony

If I'm not mistaken, the AI for converted tracks was made by Dave Boyle,
who according to David Noonan is "quite good" at this :-)

Took a lot of tweaking to get the Spa AI to be competitive (it would
lift at places a human would never lift).  The Ring AI I described
in the thread below-the LP line there could use a little reworking.

I certainly agree - great work.

I created a short race review against the AI here:

Most the cars are from eurospeed

touring cars (and Aussie V8s too!).

Thanks Goy, but I haven't actually done any AI for the converted road
courses yet. :o

I think only a few of my oval AI are in the current converter. But I did all
the rest of the oval tracks in the updated converter. Hopefully it won't be
too long for them to be released ;).

Hi Dave

Yes, indeed your super work on the AI for ovals will be in the next release.

All that's holding me up is tuning the road track AI for those who prefer
TransAm (and I'm one of those).

Cheers!

Dave

Even more to look forward too :)

Funny how you wait for years in some cases in anticipation for the next big
release and then it sneaks up on you!

I hadn't anticipated even bothering with NR2003 as a road racer

Cheers

You know, me either. But I have to say that instead of tuning up for an
upcoming CTS league season this weekend, I got stuck/***ed to running
laps in T/A mode at Kyalami, Monaco, Spa and yes I have even turned my very
first four or five laps at Nurburgring (sp?). I don't see how you guys
remember all them sections of that last one. I managed a sub 9 minute lap
and felt like jumping up and down LOL! (Yes, I know that is woefully slow).
Monaco is GREAT except that Armco-repellant barrier at the last hairpin
before the S/F line...and I thought I was doing ok at Kyalami until I found
the www.setup-guru.com site and downloaded Achim Trensz's (sp? sorry if I
***ed your name Achim) setup for it and then saw the he'd turned a 1:13
flat with it. Back to the practice sessions for me. :) I couldn't break
1:15.05 there though I did run several 75 sec.-flat laps in a row.

Not too bad for a guy that has ONLY run ovals online and off for about 4
years now and just spent a couple of hours getting re-immersed in turning
right again. AND I use a predominately NASCAR type wheel with my TSW2 Cup
with that big honking wheel on it. A few tweaks to some of my setups to help
me with the steering (since I don't use any helpers/aids) and I can see me
at least being a mid-pack-jack now instead of the perennial road course
back-marker I used to be.

I can see the T/A mod alone keeping this title alive for some time. It isn't
GPL by any stretch, but it is as nice a road racing package as there is
commercially available presently, IMHO anyway. I can finally retire my
efforts to get SCGT running right on my ultra modern WinXP system...
