GPL roll centre heights.... Doug A? Joachim? Steve S?

Howdy.

I've been setting up a Ferrari 312 for Ruud's Racer - specifically, I've
been trying to duplicate the handling of a GPL 312 rather than a real life
one..... er, that's assuming that the GPL car isn't perfect in every way, of
course :0)

As far as I am aware, GPL uses fixed non-moving roll centres (just like in
Racer).... what I'd like to know is what height they're set at. Anyone know?

Thanks very much.

Jim

Jim,

Sorry, no.  Yer prolly right, tho--it's a fixed r.c.--but it may be
different for each car.  Mebbe Alison knows?

Heh didn't expect a reply so soon, thank you :0)

I don't know if Alison reads r.a.s. much, haven't seen her posting recently
anyway, and I didn't want to bother anyone via email.

With luck she'll wander along some time... from memory she set up a GPL car
once with Cobra wheelbase/track/weight/weight distribution, so maybe she
altered roll centre heights at the same time and hence knows the answer to
my question....??

Cheers anyway Steve

Hi Jim,

I don't know the value either, but I know someone who might know outside
from Papy. I'll send him your email address and tell him what you want.
Maybe he'll contact you.

Apart from just getting the actual value from someone who knows, you
might be able to:
- make a custom camera right in front of the car
- look at a steady shot from the car at a standstill
- deduce the RC from that by following the suspension rods
horizontally; then from the point where they meet, draw a line to the
contact patch center.
- where that last line cross the car centerline, there's a reasonable
rollcenter.

v0.5 of Racer will probably do dynamic rollcenters; they're analyzed
in Carlab now when you drag your suspension rods. Nice to see.

On the other hand, static RC's are nice because it's a bit more
predictive (doing good suspensions is probably an art in itself).

Hope you find out the RC heights though; that's interesting info.
There once was a thread IIRC where for a Cart or F1 car the front RC
height was a little below ground, and the rear was *just* above the
ground.
