Digital Sports - GPL-related Interview with Doug Arnao

For my latest Inside ***Racing column, I feature an interview with
Doug Arnao, who assisted Papyrus in the development of Grand Prix
Legends and the accompanying strategy guide.

Hope you find it interesting and useful...

Digital Sports - GPL-related Interview with Doug Arnao

First, I want to thank Doug for his setups. I've always done my own in the
past, but there's no reason for me to do that with GPL. His setups match me
perfectly.

Excellent article Randy. You addressed what is really my main (and only)
concern about GPL and that is the ability to drive really wild laps for fast
times. Last week I posted here at r.a.s. (GPL Handling) about this very
topic. When I bought the GPL, one of the first things I did was to look at
some fast lap replays that I found, and I was surprised at what I saw. I was
expecting that smoothness and control would be a requirement to be fast in
GPL, and the typical wild driving hotlap technique would be punished, but
that wasn't the case.

IMHO, the AI resembles the real life drivers I've seen on some old film.
The way the AI looks in GPL is the way I'd like to eventually be able to
drive. Fast, controlled, and smooth. I've been concerned it wasn't possible.
I think I've found a way through some steering setups to do this, but I need
time because I'm still new to the sim. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one
(there are a few others actually) who was a little concerned about this, and
you provided some answers. I thought I was seeing something that wasn't
there (I've done that before)  :-).

Digital Sports - GPL-related Interview with Doug Arnao

Randy,

that was a really useful article. I've been really confused the last
week or so in trying to reconcile everything I've been reading and
seeing.  I went out and bought the Drive to Win book by Caroll Smith
and it flies in the face of other things I read.  It was helpful to
hear about the track modeling, low rider setups and why that works.

Is there any chance you can do an interview with Dave Kaemmer? I would
really like to hear his thoughts about sims, his level of satisfaction
with GPL and his future plans.  He doesn't seem to visit with the
press much and seems to take very little credit for the creation. Is
he really this modest?

Anyway,  thanks for the helpful article.

Thanks for the response.

Yes, I'd love to interview Dave.  So far, though, it hasn't been
doable.  If people really want to see one, I'll certainly revive my
efforts to get one.
