On the site with the images of old gp's, i noticed the pics of Tom Pryce's
fatal crash. What happened in the crash, it looks a bit odd in the photo
where the car is driving down the road with all 4 wheels off the ground and
his head is leaning down.. Anybody know?

He hit a young fire marshal who was running across the track. They were
both killed. Do date still the most horrendous accident I have ever
seen.

Sounds like the photo is taken after the incident that killed him. Just as
he came over the blind crest at Kyalami's old s/f line he hit a marshal
carrying a fire extinguisher to another car that had just retired. Pryce his
the marshal as he was in the middle of the track and the fire extingusher
hit him in the face at close to 180mph. Pryce's car continued out of control
all the way down to T1 when it hit Laffite's car.

Geez..What was the marshall doing on the track? Thank god for the saftey in
todays racing... After watching the crash at the start of the gp race last
week, and still see him walk from the wreck was amazing..

Some time ago I found a video of this accident. It was some of the
most disturbing things i've seen.

Apparently another marshal, with a better view of that part of the circuit
gave the 'all clear' by blowing a whistle or something for the marshal to
run across the track. Unfortunately the weight of the fire extinguisher
slowed him down, so he didn't make it...

This video was in some really bad moveis/videos...kinda like "faces of
death". It is sickening to watch. It is in one of those Orson Wells "End of
the World/Nostodamus" things from the late 70's. It is worse than that ARCA
crash from Daytona when the ambulance working got nailed and pushed under
the car, but I think he lived.

The marshalls name was Jacques Van Vuuren, he apparently was crossing the
track at the time. I know several people who saw the accident first hand
and apparently the fire extinguisher flew right over the grandstand. Heaven
knows what damage it would have caused if it had gone flying into the
crowded grandstand!

A pointless waste of two lives:(

I saw it on a video called 'The Quick and the Dead'. It had many horrific
crashes. I knew the marshall was killed .. that was kind of obvious, but I
didn't realise Tom Pryce was killed too.
