A noticable amount. I tried zipping around Silverstone earlier with
auto-shift. I can normally circulate at 1:31-ish; with automatic gears
I was struggling to get under 1:34.

Provided you're even halfway able to keep the car on the track, the
best advice is: do it NOW! It'll be the best thing you've ever done.
GPL is so much more fun when you have to do *everything* yourself. I
'went manual' almost straight away (not sure if I ever followed the
book on this game), and have never regretted it.

I used to use the NASCAR Pro wheel, but upgraded to the LWFF (love the
force feedback in GPL).  The thing I really miss though is the shift
lever, I felt more in tune with the era.

I'd say it's about 1 sec per minute. It obviously
helps with accelerating but it also improves your
ability to brake.

At first it's a little difficult to lift when
shifting but you should be ok after an hour or two.
Changing the gearing to suit one or two corners
can certainly help your times AND minimise the
number of necessary gear changes.
