Two things I like about the game besides the graphics (which look pretty
amazing, even on my GF3 Ti200 "powered" rig <g>), are the "within limits"
freeform gameplay and the fact the easy setting allows a non-dedicated fps
player to play and enjoy the game.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting pasted in the Call of Duty -
Dawmnville demo, even on the greenhorn setting. Played it for two hours now,
in 2 minute bursts, 'coz that's how long it takes me to get killed or
inadvertantly shoot an allied soldier (--> graphics turned down in an effort
to get better movement/aiming) and no progress whatsoever. Things like "get
a Panzerfaust from the church"... cool, will do, but if the tank, which I've
yet to actually see, doesn't mow me down or blow me up getting there, some
German or friendly bullit tops me while I'm looking to take a bead on the
tank (where *is* it?).

I played the demo of Far cry and it didn't impress me enough to want
to buy it. Now S.T.A.L.K.E.R. may be another story. From what I've
seen and read of that game it has me really intrigued.

Oh, I found both CoD demos to be pretty easy, even at the highest difficulty
setting. And I'm just your average guy who plays FPS in "easy" level to get
through them quickly (which means, a couple of weeks) and remove them from
the HDD to make space... so, if I did it, you can do it too.
The tank (IIRC) is at the right corner (looking from the door of the building
you enter when the shelling starts), partially hidden behind a wall. Once inside
the church, try to take it out by shooting at it through the rightmost window
(beware of enemy soldiers).

Eh... keep in mind I'm the kind of guy who struggles at the easy setting
when playing with the aid of a walkthrough.

Thanks, got it now. Also thanks to a tip received from a fellow GF3 owner: I
get a big speed boost if I set the texture detail to 32-bit instead of
"default". Now playing smoothly at 1024x768, which makes a big difference.

I had to sprint to the car, then combat crawl to the sandbags in the road,
taking out (ever-replenishing?) Germans near the corner of the "take cover"
house and the two foxholes on that side of the map as I went, to be able to
hit it with the Panzerfaust (would require some serious practise with the
weapons if I was to buy and play this one), but I did manage to blow it up.

Now the graveyard is swarming with Boche eventhough we're laying down fire
from 3 heavy machineguns and I'm still dying. I'm guessing bursts is the key
here, but the same soldiers that seem to go down quite easily when hit with
a burst from the Thompson seem to be able to take serious punishment from
the HMG (not to mention the tombstones themselves <g>).

Are you using the MGs yourself - you can use the "use" key to take over from
your colleagues and use the MGs. Then it is a piece of cake as you never
need to reload...

Yup, me and two AI. I take the unmanned one on the left. You're saying spray
them and to hell with the accuracy?

Not sure if there is an advantage but I took over the one on the right and
it seemed a turkey shoot...

Just briefly stop shooting to get a quick update on where they are and
spray!

Hopefully it works with a GF2 too...

The way I used to do it was run after the guy the captain sends to scout (who
usually get shot in the head after crossing the street), and overtake him;
apparently, that puzzles the Germans, and they come out of hiding instead
of sniping him. So, when the Panzer arrives, you're already on the other side
of the street, and it's easier to get rid of the Germans behind the wall
at the end of the street (since, staying prone, the tank cannot get you from
where it is) and then get cover behind it to enter the church.

A bug I've noticed is that, if you go to the MGs too soon (instead of doing
some other stuff that you're supposed to do), the Germans won't die, no matter
how hard yo uhit them. They'll keep reviving again and again. So, leave the
soldiers with the MGs take care, and you go with the rest through the houses
to the other side, IIRC. It's a good idea that you bring a Panzerfaust along
so that you don't have to return for it later.

Not that I'm "in the know", but supposedly Far Cry's development team
is VERY mod-friendly! They welcome them just like Battlefield did.

The general openess that hasn't been found in a FPS for years and years.  I
mean, just kill somebody in the water off the beach, and wait a little ;)

Can you kill someone in this game? I walked up to someone and unloaded my
gun into his head, he smiled and shot me dead with one bullet.

You need to fire the gun - not just unload the ammo.
