Canadian Racer Killed in Car Accident

MIRABEL, Quebec (AP) - Jean-Francois Gaulin, a racer
on the developmental Formula 2000 series, was killed
along with two passengers Tuesday when his speeding
Porsche crashed into an electric pole.

Cpl. Jean Finet of Quebec provincial police said the car,
which might have lost a tire, was probably going more than
150 mph on Highway 15, a six-lane road that runs north
from Montreal.

``That's a fact,'' Finet said. ``The car was going very, very
fast.''

The lone survivor in the car told police the Porsche
Carrera 2001 was going 156 mph at the time of the crash.
The speed limit is 62 mph. The four had just left a popular
bar nearby.

The car, driven by the 28-year-old Gaulin, flipped over
three times before slamming into a utility pole.

``He was a very affable, very reserved young man,'' Didier
Schrannen, a journalist who covered the racing circuit,
said of Gaulin.

'`I don't know what kind of habits he had as a driver on the
road, but I know he was very prudent on the race course.''

The other man and woman who died were in their late 20s
or early 30s. A 29-year-old woman, the fourth occupant in
the car, was hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

Their names were not released by authorities.

this is not a "racer" death. It is the death of an idiot intent on reckless
driving in an uncontrolled enviroment. He just happened to race as well.

I agree with ya, Zonky.  They just left a bar, and decided to go on a
joyride at 156 mph.  Pretty stupid if you ask me.

Ah, 156 in a 62.  Sounds like he deserved to die.  Pity the innocent people
with him.

Really? If he'd been drinking- then they were stupid
If he was speeding that much and they didn't even ask him to stop...

Hate to see another death in this world but I really think this guy had it
coming.  I grew up having a father who was a volunteer fireman and now I myself
have become one.  I've seen things like this more often than I care to see.  My
opinion is if your gonna go fast in your personal car, have the common sense to
do it in a controlled environment on a race track.  Most tracks have "open to
the public" type things where all you need is a certification from the track or
an SCCA liscence and you can race on the weekend.  Regardless of stupidity, my
condolences do go out to the families of those involved...the loss of a loved
one is still a loss no matter what the circumstances.

I wouldn't say drunk driving should be penalized with death, but a
drunk driver should have his licence and car removed for a pretty long time.

A traffic death is always said, but as Zonky said, doing 156 mph drunk
is kind of asking for it.

I know I might get flamed for this...  but I for one dont feel sorry for
this driver at all.
Only an idiot would drive at over 150mph in a 60 mph zone.
I'm sorry, but this chap was asking for it!

You are absolutely right. Not only was he endangering his life and the
lives of those in the car with him -- who had a CHOICE and decided
themselves to ride with him -- but he was endangering the lives of
completely innocent people who did NOT have a choice in the matter.
I'm just glad he didn't kill anyone who wasn't in the car with him. I
feel sorry for his family, but the way I look at it this is one less
moronic jackass that I have to worry about killing a member of MY
family.
