MIRABEL, Quebec (AP) - Jean-Francois Gaulin, a racer
on the developmental Formula 2000 series, was killed
along with two passengers Tuesday when his speeding
Porsche crashed into an electric pole.
Cpl. Jean Finet of Quebec provincial police said the car,
which might have lost a tire, was probably going more than
150 mph on Highway 15, a six-lane road that runs north
from Montreal.
``That's a fact,'' Finet said. ``The car was going very, very
fast.''
The lone survivor in the car told police the Porsche
Carrera 2001 was going 156 mph at the time of the crash.
The speed limit is 62 mph. The four had just left a popular
bar nearby.
The car, driven by the 28-year-old Gaulin, flipped over
three times before slamming into a utility pole.
``He was a very affable, very reserved young man,'' Didier
Schrannen, a journalist who covered the racing circuit,
said of Gaulin.
'`I don't know what kind of habits he had as a driver on the
road, but I know he was very prudent on the race course.''
The other man and woman who died were in their late 20s
or early 30s. A 29-year-old woman, the fourth occupant in
the car, was hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
Their names were not released by authorities.
