GPL tire temp modeld completely?

by Russell Keatin » Tue, 28 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I know that it is important to get the inner, middle and outer tire
temperatures near each other, but does the GPL model care what the actual
tire temperature is?

I was driving the converted Loudon track (an oval) and my right from tire
was way over 300 degrees yet I couldn't feel a difference.  I remember
experimenting in ICR2 where I got the tire so hot it blew out.  I remember
in Nascar 2 getting tires too hot and sliding all over.  From my brief
experience, it doesn't appear that GPL models that.

So are GPL tire temperatures modeled completely?

Thanks,
Russell

Could it be that the *** was so much harder in those days
(each set of tyres would do several races) which would mean that
increases in temperature would have less effect than modern
softer tyres.

FYI I thought I had a semi-decent setup for Fontana the other
day and managed to do some pretty quick laps in practice.
Stupidly I failed to do anything about the consistent understeer
I was getting.  After half a dozen race laps my tyres were
obviously too hot and I was lapping 2-3 seconds a lap slower
than practice and unable to do anything about it.

I think the lack of grip is more noticible in medium slow corners on
roadcourses.  The esses at Mexico get pretty hair-raising when the temps get
above 240.  On ovals I can't really tell the difference until I get up
around 330 or so.  At 380 the car suddenly becomes totally undriveable.

I think they are, Russell, but tyre *wear* isn't modelled.
The efect of tyres heating up seems (to me anyway) to result in a reduction
in grip.

Drive a little more. You'll notice that the RF tyre will lose grip after
say 4 laps on the large ovals. It simply gets too hot. On the smaller
ovals like Pikes Peak you have about 10 laps before understeer sets in.
So yes, the temps are definitely modeled.
At road tracks this is less noticeable but, like Aubrey says, try Mexico
with a full tank and you will be able to tell when the tyres start
overheating.

The tyre model is as good as it gets for PC sims. Tyre grip is at its
peak at 200-230 deg, and it drops way off when the tyres get hotter.
Additionally, the tyre pressures will rise drastically with the temp.
rise, causing the tyres to be overinflated and lose their shape. This
also reduces grip. Tyre wear isn't modelled, because the tyres were so
hard that they lasted several races, that's why they won't flat spot
or wear out.

200-230?  I always shot for 180-185.  I always thought that 200 was not
only overheating but I swear that I lost grip at that time.  If I'm not
getting my tires hot enough then my WR's are far from where they could be
:-(     (WR's in the F3)
