LFS - Are You Guys Easily Entertained or What?

by Wayne Bradle » Sat, 24 Aug 2002 06:26:01

Ahhh... Understood.  It's quite amazing how non-internet savvy people think
that the experienced internet users are no-life, zit faced kids, geeks,
freaks or some combination of the above.   I had the same sort of situation
back in the day of the NROS. Anyone not involved in the "NROS World"
couldn't understand that I would race for hours every night testing setups.
I think I was categorized as a "no-life" back in those days by said
non-internet savvy people.  Anyway, thanks for clarifying, it all makes
sense to me!

LFS - Are You Guys Easily Entertained or What?

by David Powel » Sat, 24 Aug 2002 06:39:19

I get similar flack from my mates, until youve seen there are places on the
net with pretty normal areas you dont know about it.

If not for GPL or sim racing, I'd have no interest in the net apart from
shopping/information.

As for No-Life, whatever "floats your boat", I'd rather be having what I
class as fun rather than constantly aspiring to social treads as some of my
RL counterparts do and trends that at times I have little interest in.

LFS - Are You Guys Easily Entertained or What?

by Mitch_ » Sat, 24 Aug 2002 06:56:01

Interesting point David.  I raced with a group for a couple years prior to
the Sacramento California Likereal LAN event last year.  During the weekend
I had no less than 10 guys walk up to me in amazement saying the same thing.
"Dude, I thought you were some dumb mexican"!  That just shows how
inadequate the internet is for actully *KNOWING* someone vs your own
interpretation (or mis-interpration) of that individual.

Proceed with caution...

Mitch

LFS - Are You Guys Easily Entertained or What?

by David Powel » Sat, 24 Aug 2002 07:15:49

Oh I agree....Fully....

Internet is almost entirely perceptive, at initial contact.

Apart from I would add, those people on VROC I mention many were exactly as
I excepted them when I met them...Is that me being a good read of character,
or just knowing them long enough? I add at LAN events i've attended, there
were a few odd balls, I'd say I wasnt suprised by 75% and 25% were not as
excepted. Or does this just mean at VROC people are generally themselves? or
maybe as we all love one thing this has bonded the longterm members
together.

It could be argued that a flame war is a good way to dig below the surface
of intially projected personalities, and this is a rapid way to the workings
of a persons mind, but only certain areas of the entire entity. But lets not
go down that route, it's quite complex.

I've mulled over this one quite abit believe me...

Eh? -How Mexicans would be called Mitch? -Could be the image I have of you
is wrong (I have you down as a check shirt guy), but I would never have come
up with "Mexican".

Actually, so far so good as to meeting people I got to know via the net. Of
the now 20-odd I've met (across various interest) I only completely missed
the ball on two occasions. One was simmer Keith Lawrie (far skinnier than
I'd imagined), another was a fellow electronics hobbyist whom I'd assumed to
be Flemish, like me, but is actually of Ivory Coast descent (i.e. black) and
adopted into a Flemish family.

Jan.

LOL

Just think of the face those people did when I showed my face at the
Likereal LAN in Albany ;-)

I always assumed the same thing Jan..  How many mexicans are named Mitch??
lol..  But my last name is Alatorre (Step dad, great guy btw) which is a
mexican name.  I've got a lot of funny looks when I tell people my name and
they see my blonde hair blue eyes :)

I am a pretty conservative type but not to the extent of check shirts and
pocket protectors <vbg>.
