Out of the box GPL only lets you use the GP cars to race. The other cars are
only available in training.  The lap times you run are the same in GP and
novice races, the difference is the AI cars and the damage as you've stated.

So in a word "Yes"

First up, are you driving the full GP car in the races i.e. Single race and
Championship, that's novice to GP and is it just the AI cars and the damage
that changes, in other words can you drive the same lap times in novice and
GP races?.
