GP2, how smooth ddoes it run? The truth!

by Jim Hyndm » Wed, 17 Jul 1996 04:00:00

I have had the game for a couple of daysnow and played it for quite a
few hours. I have 2 comps. a dx2 8 meg ram and  a 1 meg sirrus vlb
video card. And a p166 16 meg edo ram and a Trio 64 video card with 2
meg edo ram.
On the p166 in SVGA with nearly all detail on, only the sky and some
textures in the rear view mirrors off and it runs very smoothly on all
tracks with the exeption of Monaco where there is a slight slow down
in some parts of the track but it is still well playable. I reckon
that that German guy who posted in this group that it was shit slow on
his P200 must have had his hand on his*** rather than the joystick!
Thats the good news now the bad on my DX2 in VGA with all detail on
LOW it was very jerky and virtually unplayable. perhaps 16 meg of ram
and a fast Video card with 2 meg of Vram would bring it up to speed
but I doubt it. I reckon that any 486 owners who buy GP2 taking notice
of the min specs on the box will be MEGA pissed off.
As for the game, does it live up to expectations? A deffinate yes (
povided you have the hardware) the crashes are astounding.
It is very hard to play though, I dont claim to be an ace driver but I
could win in semi pro and be cometitive in Ace mode in GP1 and can
account for myself pretty well in Indycar But I find myself strugling
to be cometitive in ROOKY mode in GP2, granted I have not fiddled
around to much with the settings as yet.
In a nut shell the game is heaps better than Indycar 2 in EVERY
respect. John Wallace was right all the Whining German bastards who
said it was ***are wrong.

I myself have a 80486DX 33Mhz (Yes, they still do exist), 8 Mbyte, Cirrus Logic
1Mbyte vesa localbus video card. I'am happy to report that the frame rate I'am
getting is a 14.2 with nothing on although my specs are lower than the minimum
requirements!!!!. The reason that I'am not running to the hardware store to buy
a new computer is, of course, money. But I bought the game only to play it and I
find it playable.
When I bought Formula One Grand prix (GP1), I only had a 80286 16 MHz and the
game only gave me a frame rate of 8.2. So looking back this is a improvement
over the previous version, and with this improved frame rate I also get a better
simulation!!!!!
So whats bad news to you is working for me.

Bye,

I'm using an AMD DX2 80Mhz with 8Mb and a Genoa Phantom 64 bits with 1
Meg, and I'm getting 19fps in VGA with detail level 1 (I don't see the
monaco tunnel!!) sky hill and fences off and no textures except smoke
in mirrors... and... I love it... because to CC cars are hot (It's
fantastic to race against them) the sound is GOOD (even if i can't
hear others-- major flop here!!) and the driving model is better...
so... I worth it... I can't wait to see what my P150 32Mb and Matrox
can do in MSDOS mode. (I get 16 fps in Windows with SVGA and
all on... in detail menu... in monaco :-) ) . In VGA I can get
everything on and get 19 fps inside windows95.

I LOVE THIS GAME... (and also NBA)

Bye 4 now

GP2, how smooth ddoes it run? The truth!

I am both chuffed and pissed off with this game: the AI is way ahead of F1GP1
(the other cars can actually avoid you unless you are trying to take them
out and they are a lot more competitive speed wise but still a second or two
off the pace at semi-pro level) but it is too slow for my liking.

The problem is with my P90, old m'board, slow graphics card it runs like a dog
140-180% proc. occupancy in a race round Imola.  I mean that it lurches,
suddenly speeds up when you overtake a car, etc.  With no cars or just
watching from a computer controlled car it is fast and smooth.  On my P120
with 32 Mb and fast graphics card here at work it is much better in VGA; SVGA
is still too slow for me.  I guess you have to shell out for a fast processor
and a decent graphics card to play it properly.

I'm trying to decide whether I want the competition enough to spend the dosh

I'd just like to point out that there is some very severe paraphrasing
in the above comment :)

Cheers!
