Fake PII 300's

by rswe » Mon, 08 Jun 1998 04:00:00

If you just purchased a PII 300 you may want to check that it is a real
300 and not a remarked 233 or 266 overclocked. According to Intel all
300's that are shipped contain ECC functionality. (Error correction
code). A fake 300 tested with the ct software ( Andreas Stiller) will
determine if ECC is absent with the CPU. If no ECC support is discovered
with the CPU, Its a fake. Probably a 266 overclocked. Mine was a fake,
and I took it back to the dealer. 2 mins of my time I had a real one to
take home. If you suspect yours may be a fake, e-mail
http://www.racesimcentral.net/, and they can give you the details. Also
check out the Intel discussion groups, this seems to be running rampant,
a lot of people are discovering fakes. If you get no where with this,
e-mail me and I will send you the software.

Fake PII 300's

There out there, I had one. PII 233's & 266's are being overclocked and
remarked as 300's.  Intel shipped the 300's with ECC functionality.
(error correction) If you do not have ECC, you do not have a 300. E-mail
Andreas Stiller, editor at c't. Andreas developed a test program which
checks ECC enabled on your 300. http://www.heise.de/ct/ctp2poll. Also
check the Intel discussion groups, its a hot topic. If you have problems
getting the software, e-mail me and I will zip it to ya. Rumers are
flying concerning the 350's and 400's as well.
