GPL PAtch 1.0->1.2

by Steven Crook-Dawkin » Tue, 20 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here:

Got the GPL Patch 1.2 from Papy.com,
(Papy say it will upgrade v 1.0-> v1.2)
confirmed it is the UK patch I downloaded.

I'm unzipping the file into the GPL directory,

whilst it unzips it complains that it cannot replace
several files, turns out they are set to "read only",
(by the original GPL install script  - not me)

Eventually get all new files in place, and GPL
confirms its Ver 1.2 on start up, but then
the game complains it doesn't have the CD in
the drive - even when the game is run from
the CD autorun.

Anyone know how I get v1,2 to work correctly?

Thanks.

This is a small bug in the patch... just extract the patch to a temporarily
directory and copy all the files from that directory to the GPL
directory....

Thanks for the response Sjon,- but I'm not sure I understand
how this will help.

If there is a bug in the patch, then it will still be there whether the
unzip program stores the files or I do later.

The version of GPL.exe that emerges from the patch, when
subsitituted for the old GPL will, when run, fail to start the
game due to failing to find the CD. The CD in question has
come straight out the Sierra Originals box. The only way to
get the game working again is to repalce with the old
executable.

Sorry - I'm not trying to act stupid - I guess I must be the
only with this problem with the UK patch?

Try this out:

Use the Windows Explorer to locate the C:\Sierra\GPL folder.

Point at the GPL folder and use the Right Hand mouse button to click once.

Select Properties from the bottom of the menu.

Left click in the Read Only box, to get rid of the grey check mark, leaving
it plain white.

Now try the patch.

The procedure gets rid of the read-only attribute set against some of the
files, which the patch cannot update as they are read-only.

Cheers,

Keith

Sorry - let me clarify.

My problem is not getting the patch to unzip and load in the
right places. (I've already tried the stuff you suggest.) The problem
is that _once I've unzipped the files_ in their correct places
the resulting installation no longer sees the CD.

Now - this is nothing to do actually loading the patch,
its getting the thing to work afterwards.

I'll ask Papyrus I guess.

I dunno but a couple of ideas.  If you have multiple cd drives on you
machine try the other drive.  Or maybe try the no-cd patch.  I think it
is at www.the-fastlane.com

Steven, do you want to double-check that you have the right patch? I also
have the UK version of GPL (although not the budgeted version, but I'm sure
they're the same)...
Mine's called GPL12_uk, 1.25Mb, dated 6 Nov 1999. I installed straight into
the c/sierra/gpl folder, and all went well.
 Hope you get it sorted!

Colin,

Yep - gpl12_uk.exe.(1.287Mb)  I was careful here
because they point this out on the download page.

So you didn't need to change directory privileges?

Rather ironically - Sierra's support site is down.

I don't suppose you're using a different CD-Rom, are you? You appear to have

To version 1.2 from version 1.0.0.0?

If so - could you let me know which patch
file you used from papys site?

Either the UK patch doesn't work for Win 98
or I'm destined forever to say on v.1.0.0.0

I'm assuming that you have to get the countries
patch so that it knows which CD its expecting
when it loads.

Thanks

Steve

GPL PAtch 1.0->1.2

I only have one GPL CD, it came out of a "Sierra Originals"
box, bought brand new, from a reputable dealer, on Monday
here in the UK, about 5 miles from my house. So there's been
no funny business.

Thinking about this, I am beginning to suspect that the CD I
have (i.e. the "budget" one) might be being recognised as a
different countries CD (i.e. not a UK one) no reason why
this should be the case, other than its the only explanation
I can think of. I'll hunt around on the CD to see if there
is any obvious signs that it may be reporting a different
domicile.

Failing that - I'll see what Sierra say.

Failing that - I'll just use V 1.0.0.0 - its fantastic as it
is anyway.

Thanks for all your comments everyone. I'll report
any (forward) progress.

Cheers

Steve

Don't know if this has been covered already, but the "Sierra Originals"
may not be "region specific", do you need the CD to play the unpatched
version ?

If not, you have a US version, if yes, you have the UK version....

As someone previously suggested; try the US patch just for grins.
Something about the budget edition not being region specific like the
