piece on TV that the original director (forget his name) wanted some
stunts in the movie done as he said....stuntmen said "No Way" so he did
them himself. Was going to make a sequel but he died before he could do
it, if my memory is correct.

Has anyone actually DRIVEN a car that did this?  I haven't - I'm just wondering
if you could tell by the way the car handled.  I'm thinking that you might not
be able to tell VISUALLY from inside the car...

Probably not. Those cars handle so bad, it wouldn't matter anyway.

I have a story about this. :-)
My buddy loved telling me how much faster his 69 Chevelle (350 4bbl)
was than my 87 Mustang. I actually agreed with him, but finally got
sick of hearing about it. We found a safe spot to time them, and did
multiple runs, even trading off on cars. Surprise!
My Mustang smoked the Chevelle every time, even in the swapped runs.
What's funny is that the Chevelle's mushy exagerrated body motions
made it feel much faster than it actually was. My rear quad-shocked
Mustang would stay nearly flat on launch, with the only drama begin
wheelspin. The Chevelle would make all kinds of noise through the
Cherry Bombs, then lurch back and and to the side on it's Jello
suspension so hard that it'd throw you back and give you a big eye
full of hood... All theatrics.

Throw in a few corners and a modern Cavalier could smoke it (which is
not to say I'd take one over the beautiful Chevelle).
I love those old muscle cars, and know some were brutally fast, but
most weren't near as fast as they felt. :-)

The driving scenes that always amuse me are all those 50's and 60's
Hollywood bluescreen jobs where a driver is moving along a road as straight
as an arrow whilst holding a conversation with a passenger and doing an
impression of Colin McRae's steering technique on an international rally. I
know those old Yank tanks have a reputation for soggy handling but were they
really that bad?  ;-)

No, but the roads are crap. Even if the road is going in a straight
line, the bumpy and grooved tarmac make constant steering necessary :)
