: Thanks for the link!
: The short wheelbase, widened Quattro's are just as wild as the Evo.
: They're so out of proportion they look almost like a charicature.
: That Audi (used at Pikes Peak), along with a bunch of other Group B
: cars are pictured here:

Three months ago there was a short wheelbase Quattro Sport for sale in the
town I live in (Davos, Switzerland).  The guy couldn't give it away.  He
started with a price of 80,000 and a big sign explainng all the history,
technology etc.  Then the price dropped to 50,000 (1SFr = 1CAD = 0.68USD),
then it dropped to "Price negotiable".  It finally disappeared after about
two months, but maybe he just moved it to a dealership in a better
market.  Being a ski resort of the rich and famous, Davos is crawling in
the winter with Escort Cossies, Lancia Integrales, and Subaru WRCs, but
this was the first time I had seen a Group B homologation car in the
flesh, so to speak.  My girlfriend didn't understand why I had to look at
it every second day, as to most people it is an ugly little car.  I even
have to admit that, although I'm sure I'd get a big grin out of the
performance, I find the whole look of most rally cars too "boy racer" for
street use.  I would gladly do without the wings, scoops and snorkels on
most WRC derivatives for a more stealthy look.

>> I'd love a sim based on the wild heyday of rallying that produced such
>> cars as the Audi Quattro and Porshe 959, and the Lancia Delta S4
>> (turbo AND supercharged!).
>> It's even been suggested that the Ferrari GTO was built with Group B
>> homologation in mind, and even had a special 650 horsepower version
>> called the Evoluzione.

>> These cars were unreal, most of them 4wd, with insane power to weight
>> ratios. Sort of dirt versions of the wild Can Am cars of the 70's.
>> A little too wild probably, as spectator and driver fatalities brought
>> an end to the class in May of 86.

They are still pretty quick. On the recent coverage of the Goodwood Festival
of Speed on SpeedVision,  the quickest car up the "driveway" was a 98 Williams
F1 car, the second quickest of all the cars was Richard Burns driving his
Suburu world rally car.

On a modern stage, yes.  The roads used during Group B were much
faster because the 120km/h rule was not in effect.  On a faster stage
like those used in the 1980s, the sheer horsepower would allow a 205
T16 or a Delta S4 to win.

Definitely; however, IMO it was necessary to cancel Group B at the
time.

Actually, it was a McLaren (didn't catch if it was the 1998 or 1999 model)
driven by test driver Nick Heidfeld (who will be a regular driver for Prost
next year).

And speaking of the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Speedvision ... man, I've
seen some great shows from Goodwood.  The sports car race was really fun -
E-Type Jags, Corvettes, Cobra Daytonas, Ferraris with some great drivers -
Phil Hill (and his son), Jack Brabham, Derek Bell, Jochen Mass.  Poor Nick
Mason (Pink Floyd drummer and the owner of a beautiful Ferrari).  Damon Hill
was his team driver and Damon went off and stalled it before he could pass
the drive to Mason.

If you get SpeedVision, be on the lookout for these programs.
