yeah, I know, but it's not Need for Speed we are talking about, it should
take you awhile to drive fast (even with dumbed down AI), you should loose
until you can drive a race without wiping out. That is the nature of
simulators.
Look at Monaco (no I'm not directly comparing it to GPL), but it does have
several AI settings, it does take awhile to get used to the physics model
(the canned spins), and win a race. Not very many people can buy a sim (any
sim), and win without some practice.

The best historic F1 sim, you can read about it in a dozen
posts, is GPL.

The best modern day F1 sim, IMHO, is RS2 (MGPR) by UbiSoft.
(and don't listen to that chicken running headless through the ng. ;^)

If you can stand a sim without 3D support (video or graphics) and no
FF support, GP2 is a classic.

It's not beating the AI in GPL that is the issue - it's keeping the
thing on the track. Something I learnt to do after a few hours -
something I havn't seen anyone else be bothered. (10 mins in...F**K it,
lets play TOCA2, RC2K etc..)

There needs to be a "Bastard difficult handling" slider - that takes
away the ultra realism - and replaces with some down to earth
playability (in TOCA terms etc...not that I like TOCA< of coursE!!)

Umm.. I can drive the car well in GPL - obviously I'm not world class -
but when I'm feeling sado-masachistic - I'll fling the Ferrari round Spa
in 3:19 .

My point is that the average consumer can't be arsed to learn how to
drive a sim, before racing in it. By the time they've learnt how to do
it, it's in the bin.

Ok GPL is the best of it's kind but let's all have some patience till GP3 is
released (can't wait - it's getting unbearable!).

I bought a second hand Amiga especially for GP1, I bought my first PC (p90)
especially for GP2, and to keep up the tradition I'll sell my slow  (to
p200mmx upgraded) p90 and by me a state of the art PIII a short period
before the game is released.

I don't let anybody play GPL on my PC when they ain't got any excperience
with it.
It get's terribly on my nerfs that I see them slam the throttle when exiting
the pits and crashing out into the barrier...
It makes me wanna show them how it's done...

There isn't a chance in hell that Papyrus or Sierra will sell the
physics engine from GPL. And I'm quite sure that there are many gifted
people out there trying to break it.  But so far no one has done it. One
thing is for sure. If man made it,then someone can break it.

I understand all that - but I can't understand why they can't change a
few parameters and make the engine easier to learn and then add these
as a parameter.  Then they could release the game - catch the majority
who want a simple acarde style game and allow then and the existing
sim community to improve the model as they get better.

For instance, the grip of the tyres could be improved via a parameter
(but controlled in a multiplayer game!) which would make it much
easier for the newbie to learn.

Yeah but what if you hate driving those old cars. When is GP3 coming out?!?
