Has anyone tried direct connect successfully?  We can't seem to get it
to work...  Any tips would be appreciated.

I assume you are talking about NASCAR or MULTI?

This is the ONLY way that I have gotten it to work.  Use a "lap-link"
type serial cable, or a regular serial cable with one "null modem"
attached to either end.  Make the correct IRQ and COM port selections,
38,xxx baud works fine.  Then select "direct connect" and one machine
dials and the other answers.  It does not matter which one goes first.
Timing is not critical.

Now if I could just get the IPX connection in MULTI to work.

I've heard that it DOES...
Haven't tried it, so I can't confirm that.

If you are referring to Direct Connect with World Circuit. Then yes I
have. My brother and I play it all the time and it runs as smooth as
glass. Modem connections on the other hand are very choppy. In fact, I
went out and bought a special serial card to enable my com3 to work at
IRQ 12 to hook up my mouse thus freeing up com1 for a permanent
connection with my other machine (My ATI board uses address 2E8 thus I
can't use a com4).
The key to making any Null-Modem connection work is crossing the pins
properly. Below are the combinations needed:

       9pin-9pin            25pin - 25pin               9pin -25pin
        2-3             2-3                2-2
        3-2             3-2                3-3
        5-5             7-7                5-7

Hope this helps....

WARNING!!
==========

DO ONLY USE GROUNDED CABLES WHEN YOUR ABOUT TO DIRECT CONNECT!!!!

Me and my friend blasted our Serial-ports and Moderboards... I you are unlucky 110 Volts will
be striking your moderboard. (We live in sweden 220v)

By the way, when i returned my P166 from repair we tried again with grounded cables & ran INDYCAR2
Pretty impressing .... Wonderful to ride against eachother on Michigan !!!!!!!
