GP3 runs like a dog on Athlon 2000 + Geforce4?!

by David Mocna » Sun, 22 Sep 2002 13:07:24

Hi Guys,
I was going to get GP4 now that I got my new super-duper machine (Athlon
2000 PRO with GeForce4 video card) thinking that with it's ability to get
some decent framerate (ie. more than 25fps) it could be a fun game. Anyway,
I though before I do so I'll see how 'hot' GP3 looks on my new PC. I must
say that I'm totally shocked and it looks and runs like a dog. By that I
mean that there is nothing at all that I can do to get 100% (or less)
occupancy at 25fps even with everything switched off and at 640x480!!!

First I was trying to set it up in 1024x768 (thinking it'll run like a
dream) but at 25fps with most things in the mirrors switched off, 2/3 of the
forward things 'on' and detail at medium, I could not get the occupancy to
drop bellow 250% in the 'test' mode.

Then I though I'll turn it down to 800x600 but had not better results - it
still runs like a total dog and at 25fps with the seme settings as above,
the occupancy still didn't get much bellow 250%.

This really put me off getting GP4 as how am I expected to run that if I
can't run GP3?! What PCs are you guys running G4 (or GP4) on in order to run
35fps+ framerate (25fps in GP3)?

ps. Just for reference I run GPL at 1024x768 with all the high-res GPLEA
cars, max detail, everything on, 2x antialiassing (through hardware) and
even with all the cars in front of me the framerate is rock solid at 36fps.

It sounds like GP3 is running in software mode. You can check it under
Options - Graphics - Render Device. Select your GForce there. It runs
decently om my system which has less than half your specs in every
department. I can run GP4 ok too, albeit with a lot of graphic options
turned down.

Sounds to me like GP3 is running at the speed it was written to run at ;-)

This is an opinion:

News is that Infogramme is shutting Microprose\Hasbro or whatever you want
to call it down. In my opinion, since the company is being closed down. It
would be wise to show Infogramme that consumers aren't stupid and return
this piece of shit, that will obviously go unsupported. Looks like retailers
and consummers got burned by infogramme.

Any responsible retailer should take the product back since

GP3 runs like a dog on Athlon 2000 + Geforce4?!

Thanks guys ... you might have pointed me in the right direction. I did some
experimenting and noticed that GP3 run 100x better in software mode than
though my GeForce4. After a bit of experimenting I noticed that switching
off the "hardware 2x antialliasing" from the GeForce4 did the trick with the
framerate. With this switched off I could run GP3 in 1024x768 at 25fps and
occupancy at 100% or bellow. Though, this just made me notice (again) how
horribly the AI cars move ... it looks like they are paper cut-outs floating
above the road. It seems like the cars have no connection to the road and
seem like they have no mass at all. Odd considering that the feeling from
the***pit is not too bad when on the road 'solo' ... it's nowhere as
'alive' and as 'real' as GPL but not bad noneless. How is this (ie. the AI
cars) in GP4?

Another thing I noticed is the trouble getting my wheel (Thrustmaster
Formula Pro Digital wheel) working in GP3. It does not seem to want to 'see'
my accelerator (ie. upward vertical movement on the axis). Any tips?

ps. Though, I cannot believe that with all the 'expertise' and money behind
GP3, that it's still so far behind GPL ... GPL just feels and looks so real
... it really feels like I'm in control of this 'beast' that has weight and
momentum and is connected to the road via the 4 wheels. Not only that but it
really feels like I'm racing other cars that have mass and momentum ... not
just some computer images.cardboard-cut-outs.

I've also had an XP2000+ and a GeForce4 Ti4600, though I've just changed to
a Radeon 9700 Pro. I noticed that with the GeForce, enabling any
Anti-aliasing in the drivers killed the occupancy and fluidity in GP3
massively, making the option unusable. With the 9700 Pro, things run great
with anti-aliasing. (Must be a problem with the nVidia drivers).

If you use a third-party add-on such as GPxPatch, you can alter the RCR
trigger distance, which effectively lengthens the distance ahead of you in
which AI cars are rendered in full detail. The AI cars look great in this
mode, and lose the floating appearance seen in the standard game.

GPL ?! It looks ancient! It's the driving equivalent of Doom II :)

Johnny.

And guess what game is getting a full modernization?   Any chance we can
get Carmack to email Kaemmer and  crew??
