Major lag on start of F1RS race

by Moe Lefaiv » Sat, 09 May 1998 04:00:00

I have a major frame rate problem when starting a race with F1RS. I have a
P133 w/64mb ram and a Monster 3d card. I know that the recommended
processor speed of 166 is recommended, but the game works really smooth at
any other time during the game whether it be practicing or qualifying.
I love this sim but it sucks when you grab pole position, then when the
race starts you have to let the pack pass you because you will wipe out
guarenteed on account of the lousy frame rate.

I have an Intel Pentium 200Mhz MMX and 64Megs of Ram. I have all features
turned on to the highest, and experience no slowdown. I suggest that you
either should upgrade the RAM or make sure that you have a true Intel
processor.

Major lag on start of F1RS race

I'm running on a P133 w/32 megs and a Monster 1 and have the exact
same problem. I tried the sound file fix that was posted here but that
didn't help. What finally worked for me was decreasing the number of
competitors from 22 down to 11 which fixes the choppiness but, of
course,  means you're only racing against half the field. Other than
that, it looks like the both of us are due for a hardware upgrade.

I'm on a 32mb intel 166mhz and CL voodoo2 card and I'm in the same boat. I
agree reducing the field is the only thing that has worked for me.

It would be interesting to know the spec at which this problem goes away. I
could easily add another 32mb of memory or perhaps overclock to 200mhz if I
knew it would solve the problem.

Somebody else mentioned an occasional pause that occurs during the game. I
have this problem too, and I 'm sure its to do with the sound of "new
fastest lap". Even when you turn this sound off the interrupt seems to still
occur and I briefly hear some white-noise with the corresponding pause.

Try changing your swapfile to a permanent one, this worked for me.

All of these problems disappear when the system is a PII-233 running
64Mb RAM and a Voodoo2 card.
Whether they disappear at a lower spec I don't know.  I owned a P-166,
32Mb and Voodoo1 and suffered the same problems.

I then jumped to the above-mentioned spec and the problems were no
longer evident.

I have a 200 MMX, 32Meg of Ram and a Voodoo2 and had the problem. A
friend with a 166 MMX, 64Meg of Ram and a Voodoo2 doesn't get this
problem.

I change my virtual memory a permanent 100 Meg instead of letting
windows handle it and it solved the problem for me. I also susspect
that if I had added another 32 Meg of Ram it would have also solved
the problem.

On my 200MMX/ Voodoo I system, going from 32MB to 64 MB ram made the
stutter that accompanies all radio script disappear. A friend with a 166
reported similar improvements. Track loading is also a bit quicker. The
f/r slow down is still evident, but really only at the very first
corner, fluid all the way around after that.\

As you may have known, Voodoo 2 runs about as fast as a Voodoo 1 in a
non p-II comp.

I have 64mb of ram and a 150mb permanent swap file on a P200 and I
still notice the lag. Maybe it's not as bad as on your machine, but
it's still there. I find the only cure for it is to lower the amount
of opponents or just put up with it until the field spreads out.
