N4 vs. Real speeds

by JoeZ » Tue, 20 Nov 2001 13:35:16

I remember a few years back when G. Bodine set the qualifying
record at Atlanta at 197.xxx. It would seem that online racing in N4,
at Atlanta, is always is well below that (in sim mode anyway.) Is the
current
track different or is it a "rules thing" from NASCAR?

Comparing real times to simulation times has always been very
interesting for me. I realize that track changes, rule changes, and
other things probably come into play....just kind of figuring how
close the sim experience is to the real thing in terms of lap times,
qualifying times, etc.

I'd say it was a rules thing since the real speeds in todays race were much
lower, as well as the Q sppeds from the other day.  Today they only avg,.
around mid 170's during race.

You answered your own question.  It was a few years back :)  N4 models
itself with last year's season. Nascar always tries to slow down their
racing cars, as with most of the other racing series.  Teams always try new
technologies to make their cars faster.

It depends on the temperature, and various other factors (sun on track,
imperfections in the physics, impossibility to fully recreate real-life
environment in a computer model,  etc..)

That was the first qual effort on the track's current configuration, and
IIRC, it was a cold day, which means faster times.  Just a co-incidence;
nothing to do with slower cars, rules, etc.
The race record for Atlanta is from before the re-shaping in '97.

Fwiw, in a race I was in Friday night, 197's were turned in in
practice........temp was 43.

Atlanta) I think it was, Friday night in a league practice with same temp
settings as Friday in Atlanta I qualified at 28.6. I would expect a sim
racer to qualifiy faster everything else being the same. You see, we are in
no danger of getting hurt if we push the car too hard. The real guys have to
weigh that into how hard they drive, not us.

N4 vs. Real speeds

I've found the speeds to be a bit faster on N4 than real life.  I'd
watch leading drivers when they show speeds and the real good guys
online will be quite a bit faster.

Tim.
