Nascar Pro wheel - pedal spring alternative?

by John DeTor » Sat, 19 Sep 1998 04:00:00

With GPL just days away (hopefully), two springs broke on my Nascar Pro
wheel.  Does anyone have an alternative or better solution to the reacurring
problem of the pedal springs breaking.

Thanks in advance

Hi John,

Why not build your own springs?

I have a T2 so I'm not sure about the configuration
of the Pro springs.  I use a wire coat hanger wrapped
around a broom handle as a quick replacement spring.
After 3 months its still working :)  Of course if you require
perfect feedback - stiffness of the spring - some other
people recommended #506 piano wire.  You can get
it at your local hobby shop (Or maybe a musical shop?)

My problem is I haven't had a chance to find that
elusive piano wire.  Wonder how long the coat hanger
will hold out? Hehe.

Just be sure to bend the wire in the same direction
as the old one.  Since they're free you can experiment.

Happy racing,
Jason.

Definitely, try piano wire - the advantage being that if you use different
thicknesses (gauges?) of piano wire you can set the throttle/brake as stiff
as you want! (Oh yeah, it's very cheap so no need to worry about cost
either)

I used a 'screen door' "pull" spring.  It is straighforward, and takes
some slight modification (cutting out a reinforcement rib, and
drilling a couple of small holes).

It is much easier to make the pedal 'stiffer', at the same time.

Increasing the diameter of the wire when rewinding your own 'stock'
style springs will also stiffen the pedal.

The replacement springs I got from TM were significantly heavier than the
originals. Haven't broken any of them as of this date. Just contact them at
their website.....

This worked for me:
I received a couple of springs from Thrustmaster and now I'm using Paper
Clips (yes, those that cost virtually nothing) behind the pedals (I used
some bluetack and tape to attach them there but I haven't broken a spring
ever since. And this modification has very little effect on the pedals after
you recalibrate your system first.

I have always taken a 1 inch thick 3ring notebook(The kind kid use in
school) and placed it behind my pedal unit.  The thick end of the notebook
buts up behind the pedals and limits the ammount of travel, and I don't have
to worry about the pedal unit slipping away from my feet.  I have a T2 with
almost 2 years on it...including 1 1/2 seasons of offline racing in the
TPTCC and the springs are still the stock originals...however, the pots are
a mess...(but thats another story)
