Hi Guys,

Currently I'm running an AMD 750 with a Hercules GF2.

I just discovered that a BIOS upgrade on the MOBO will allow me to slap an
AMD 2600 in, and they're not too expensive either. *Big grins all round*

However, I'm wondering if this'll move the bottle neck to the GF2, and how
much overall improvement I''l get in GPL and F12001.

If the GF2 is too much of a bottle neck, what do I need to go up to to match
the new CPU? GF3, GF4?

thanks.

GPL will get a big boost.  F1 2001 will be better but still quite held back
by the GF2....

The golden rule as ever is just buy what you can afford.

It will never be wasted.

Ooh! Will I actually be able to have _everything_ in GPL? That would make my
life complete ;-)

I've got goose pimples just at that thought!

75 and I can have GPL as God intended it to be!

Bum! Just discovered that I can't get hold of a 2600 with a FSB of 266, as
they're all 333, now. I can only get a 2400.

Still, 'spose I'd hardly notice the difference, and they _are_ cheaper.

Any recommendations on a GFX card to match? I've got a feeling that a GF4 is
in order, but which brand/model is the one to go for?

Thanks.

I also have the MSI version Ti4200 (128MB).
I have yet to have any problems with it, even with the overclocking (every
now and then).

I have had a few different brands (Gainward, Asus, eVGA, Leadtek) but MSI
seems to be the most stable.

Go with a ti4200 if you are on a tight budget. Get a Radeon 9700pro (or 9800
if price is no concern ) if you can spend a little more. I highly recommend
the Radeons though.

A ti4200 will be a small vanilla cone.

A 9700 will be a large 3 scoop banana split with hot fudge, marshmallow,
whipped cream, sprinkles,and nuts.

A 9800 is all that with extra cherries on top !!!

What's the verdict on a Radeon 9200 (128 meg)?  I'm looking for a new
vid card myself (I've currently got a ti200 (GF2)) on my Athlon 800
(yes, this needs to be upgraded as well).

The R9200 used to be the R9100 which used to be the R9000 which is in
some ways used to be the R8500 if memory serves me right, and while it's
not a bad card as such, it's not a DX9 part, so it would be a budget
replacement card only and I wouldn't expect too much, however it's a
decent improvement over what you're currently running

Just a decent or signifcant improvment?  Enough to justify another $40
bucks?

that would be a sideways improvement.  the 92 is pretty close to the
4200.  What you really need to upgrade first is your cpu.  You would still
be handicapped with a fancy new vidcard and that chip.  2gig or higher
laddie...
and by that I mean the closer to 3 gigahertz the better.

I'd say it's worth 40 dollars over what you've got, just don't expect
miracles, but at least it's a Dx8 part compared to the Dx7 part you've
got now, it would probably be about equal of a GF3 ti200 or thereabouts,
that's what the R8500 was competing against, maybe a tad more in R9200
guise, say ti500 perhaps ?

What you will get however is a significant improvement in 2D quality

For the record, I'm  looking at an Athlon 2400.  Top end of my price
range.  While I'm looking at it as a primarily sim machine, I'm on a
college students budget (again :( ).

So while I currently have an Athlon 800, I'm looking at going to a
2400 (new moboard/CD/HDD ect...)

If a R9200 is close to a ti4200, then I'd get the R9200 just because
of price (thank God for Pricewatch.com!).

How's that for a plan?

Mike
