Dont buy a video card expecting miracles. If the game uses the video card
wisely you will see some modest improvements. I went from S3 trio 64+ w/2megs
to the Lightspeed 128 w/2.25 megs. GP2 was smoother but I would say only maybe
1fps gained. NASCAR seemed to get even more help and both Quake and AH-64 saw a
marked improvement.

Here is the evolution of my Weekends tunings using GP2 log:on
p5-150 w/trio
proc.  290
video 177

p5-150 w/Lightspeed
proc.  290
video  447
Modest increase

p5-150 w/Lightspeed overclocked to 166
proc.  323
video  496
Significant increase.

If you want a real increase in GP2 go for processor speed.

GP2 is VERY strange with respect to video cards. If you try using ICR2
V1.0.2, you will see quite an improvement with the frame-rate counter.
In GP2, there is little or no difference. Probably this is due to the
lack of LFB support, which was quite an oversight I think.

The new card will be faster in everything.....except GP2 it seems :(

Cheers!
John

Hiya,

I get CPU Speed 258
Video Speed  356

This is with a P133,16Meg Non EDO, Diamond Stealth 64 2 Meg DRAM.

Cu

Steve

Works ok, I play in VGA though just for the speed, I prefer the feel
of movement to the hires graphics actually I find it much better to
play with the speed, the replays are crystal smooth etc and after a
while your imagination kicks in and all the cars look real :)))
hehehehe

One Day I will have a P10000 and the cars will be rendered in real
time at 25fps and look just like tv, until then I'll just keep on
using my imagination...

This may seem like a silly question but how do your find out the
particular vid, cpu speed of your system.  I have a p133 with 16MB EDO
and a Matrox MIllenium and I am curious to see how my machine compares
with others.
Any help will be greatly appreciated

Clearly there is something wrong with the way GP2 uses your graphics
cards then. On my system (P133, 16MB EDO, 256K PLB cache, 2MB Matrox
Millennium), I _only_ (ha ha) get 340% occupancy using your Monaco
scenario above. Video score is 458 btw)

If you are getting 390% with a P166, well, at the very least it says
something about the interaction between your (good) card and GP2.
Maybe something to do with the program not supporting VESA 2??

BTW, I find it hard to believe those who have said that the GP2 video
score only reflects VGA performance. The Millennium is distinctly
average in VGA (as proved(?) by using the Doom benchmark) yet scores
very high using the GP2 one. Maybe the difference is just in the lack
of VESA 2 extensions used by GP2 and the specific video mode used?

Richard

PS: I actually tried a lap with the 340% occupancy. Quite hilarious
really. I think the slow motion replay suited my reaction times as I
made up rather a lot of places in the one lap <g>

Nothing special but NOTE that some 'low end machines' can be rather good:

Speed (c.f. DX2-66): 183
Video speed: 177

And I can say I can run GP2 very nicely, with almost all except I play in LOW
Trackside stuff.. I prefer the game and cars not the rest. (SVGA of course)

Simple question: does having log:on result in a slower framerate than
having log:off? Lately I start GP2 with log:off, but I also manually
lowered framerate and changed detail, so it isn't clear what changing
the log did for me. Everything seems faster, but that is probably just
from manually lowering framerate.

Upon examining various log texts, it would appear that log:on is only
active at startup and shutdown.  The only differences I see are based on
intial startup parameters.  If the log:on is active during actual
gameplay, one would expect to see numerous differences in the log
texts.

Hi,
Here my addition to the ever growing log list.
P100, 16mb RAM, 256kb Pipeline Burst SRAM Cache, Expert Color Graphics
Card (S3 trio64), Intel 82430 FX chipset.

Speed (cf Dx2-66):   194   (was 193 until I fiddled with my start-up files)
Video Speed:   363   (475 with S3SPDUP)

Another one to add to the pile :

Cyrix P150+, 16MB EDO, AI5TV M/B (VX Chipset), 256k cache, Spea V7 Mirage

Speed : 320
Video : 24 !!! (ISA) - maybe I need a new card ??

Mind you, I can run in VGA all details on at 23 fps and CPU never goes
over ~120%
