Well, I've got the Stealth 64 as stated above.  But it has 1meg Dram.

Video Speed: 146 (Before S3SPDUP)
Video Speed   182 (after S3SPDUP)

Not sure why it went from the 181 I had earlier to the 182 this time.
But it is a significant jump from the 146 I had before.  But to have a
77...yeeeeuuuuucccckkk!!!!!  Hmm I don't know.

I also have an AMD 5x86-133 running normally at 133Mhz, 32mb Non-edo 60ns ram,
and a 2 meg Trident PCI video. My results:

Speed (c.f. DX2-66): 238
Video speed: 85

At work I tested the game on my pentium 133, 32mb EDO, 2mb ATI Mach64, and from
memory it was something like:

speed: 285
Video: 69

AND ON A 166, same ram and video-

speed: 355
video: 70

I think the consensus is : ATI Mach64 sucks wind in Dos games. Unfortunately,
some applications we use at work don't have drivers for the Matrox, that's what
we did get until we found out they didn't work. Now we order boxes with ATI's
in them. What a shame. I could be flying at work on the 166 with a Matrox!

Unfortunately gp2 doesn't support 3d cards - I think the best video
cards for this game are the ET6000 based.

It seems to me like an error (vid:166). Cause I have an overclocked
P120(P100) with 16 megs and a MIRO 12SD 1 MB (S3 TRIO32). My results
are:

P120 256 async-cache, 16 MB (non-EDO, 70nS), MIRO 12 SD 1MB (TRIO32
chip)

CPU: 239
VID: 250 (with s3speedup: 339)

I cant imagine that the Stealth 64 2 meg VRAM Card is so bad.

What do you think about it?

My Pentium Overdrive 83 Mhz (upgraded from 486/66) with
Diamond Viper VLB 2Meg VRAM gives

CPU speed: 105
Video speed: 27

*Sigh*

Actually, I'm not sure I trust these figures as the game is quite
playable in VGA with several textures on, and even in SVGA with
no textures (and no wrecks in traffic!).  Also, I'm sure that the
Pentium Overdrive 83Mhz is at least 50% faster than a 486 (in 32-bit
environemnts).

Still, can anyone recommend a good VLB video card?

Okay everybody, you should probably sit down before I give you the
numbers........  :)

P100, Imagine 128 video

CPU:  193
Video:  28 (!!!!!!)  I dare anybody to beat that video score!

The Imagine 128 is a FANTASTIC Windows accelerator, but uses a Cirrus
Logic 5422 for DOS, and is truly awful.

Incidentally, I popped the machine's original video card back in to see
if it made a big difference (expecting that it wouldn't), and discovered
that SVGA was now very playable with Low Detail and most textures off
(all but walls and trackside).  I figured that the slow framerate was
mostly due to the P100, but found that even a marginally better video
card (didn't do a log, sorry, but it's just a Cirrus Logic 5434) made a
big difference.

I ordered a Millenium two days ago......can't get here quick enough!

: Stealth 3d won't help with gp2, it doesn't support it. But Nascar 2 is
: supposed to...

But if one is thinking of getting this card for other 3D games, it would
be nice to know how it performs in GP2 and other "normal" DOS
situations.

I know that this is just exactly the type of information that seems to
be lacking when people talk about 3D cards.  "Yeah, but what will it do
for me in DOS or Windows?"

I'd like to know if the CPU has anything at all to do with the Video
Speed. AFAIK, it's the video card, and the host bus that will make the
difference. Could someone please tell me otherwise, or what is the
point in saying your CPU speed/memory etc..?

Well, here's mine:
Cyrix 6x86-P166+ (133MHz) 16 Megs EDO
Diamond 64 2 Megs VRAM

Speed (c.f. DX2-66): 357
Video speed: 176

So, I think Cyrix kicks ass [but Diamond's kinda lame :( ]

OK, for the record...

DX4-120, 9FX Vision 330:

Speed (c.f. DX2-66): 103
Video speed: 105

It is an S3 chipset but I don't have either of the utilities
spoken about often, so can't say how much they'd improve things.
Where's that free one to be had?

I've got a P166, 32Mb EDO ram, 256Kb pipeline cache, and a
Hercules Dynamite 128.
I only got the Dynamite yesterday - I have a slow Trident 9440
which came with the computer.

Scores I got with the Trident:

CPU: 322
Video: 86  (yuck!)
SVGA, maximum details, fps set to 25.6, starting at the back of the
grid at monaco: occupancy = 390%

With the Dynamite:

CPU: 322  (how odd - no change! :) )
Video: 381
SVGA, monaco, etc. etc: occupancy = 390%

As you can see - THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE. f*** this is annoying.
THis, from a card which is supposed to be the fastest DOS card on the
market.
BUt, I am getting sent a new BIOS and set of drivers for it - maybe
that will fix things.

A little but not enough to warrant buying it just for this purpose. It is a
good overall card at a reasonable price though.
