Good News for the Future of Racing Sims?

There has been suggestions that the recent link up between Williams-BMW and
Compaq will be the first of many sponsorships of F1 teams by IT companies,
possibly replacing the Tobacco sponsorship money.

This might be a good  thing for racing sims in the long term as it could be
possible that the software manufacturers get access to more information and
possible cooperation through a link-up by them or their publishing company
with one of the teams.

Just a thought.

Oracle only this week announced their cessation of all sponsorship
involvement in sports, world-wide.

McLaren is sponsored by Computer Associates for at least two years now. So
Compaq is not the first ...

Yes but they are not a major sponsor, I think they only get a few square
inches on the mirrors.

There has already been a big discussion of this on r.a.s.f1.mod.  Compaq
is certainly not the first title sponsor from the IT world.  Some of the
examples we came up with were Olivetti (Brabham) and Data General
(tyrell).  I am sure there are some others.

Wasn't Oracle a sponsor of the 1994 Benetton?  I know that the livery in GP2 has
Oracle very prominently displayed on the side of the car.

"d-i-g-i-t-a-l"  was a prominet decal on my 1989 Tamiya Ferrari f1-89

beautiful, violin-shaped car, btw (esp. its 1990 variant, the 640, w/Prost
at the wheel!)

Yup, but they're sponsored by Informix now, have been for a couple of years
(one of Oracle's competitors). Doubt we'll see companies specializing in
databases and servers come up with a sim, tho :-)

Sorry to say, but it will be just a thought. The F1 teams are so paranoia
these days. Well the major teams anyway. This information is better guarded
as it would be top secret Mossad information. They think if I let just see a
drop of it then maybe my enemy is the next time quicker. It's like Cold War
times have never left the F1. Maybe there's a chance for all those
unemployed spies?
