Woohoo !
I bought this damn sim the day it came out (in the US anyway), after
drooling over the demo and wanting more. But i only really used part time to
break up my Nascar love once in a while.
About 18 months ago, i started racing it more as more friends got computers
and kinda put Nascar aside (i only get about a 1/2hr or so of wheel time a
day if im lucky).
Today, i am a man. I have walked through the valley of un-socialism and
emerged with a -1.44. Yeeehaw !
Now im gonna celebrate with a six-pack o' suds and see if any of my friends
remember me still. C'mon Eldred, walk to the light :)

Good stuff. I'll be there myself one day I hope, if only I had more

I'm not holding my breath.  I still have 6 tracks yet to beat the Papy
benchmark.  Three tracks are killing me: Mexico, Rouen, and Monaco.  I just
can't seem to get any faster at them.

 Eldred,

As someone who comes from the same planet at least (and with all of my times
within around 1% of the benchmark), I see you're quicker than I am at Monaco
and Mexico (0.5 S all together), but your Rouen time needs some work (3.5 S!
Problems with the hairpin by any chance?).

I won't mention "The German Track" :-(

You must be MILES ahead of me at the Ring.  When I ran my 8:30, I was sure I
was going to break into the 20's.  I couldn't have driven any faster on a BET,
so I'm afraid I may be at my limit there.  :-(
With Rouen, I have problems EVERYWHERE.  The hairpin is a big part of that.  I
can't get through that lefthander if I'm on the brakes, and I can't wait until
I'm through it to start braking.  As a result, I brake before the lefthander,
and 'coast' up to and through the hairpin.  I also can't go flat through the
sweeper on the back of the course, and braking/turn-in for Scerie is a
crapshoot at best.  At one point before I cleared my PB's I had run
2:00-something.  Haven't been able to get close since...

There's 8.39 S difference, but this is one of the few tracks where I'm
quicker in the Ferrari (my Lotus time is not much different to yours). I
reckon the Ferrari is the car of choice when you are more interested in
getting round without too many mistakes :-)

That's about what I do. I'm more interested in being in some sort of control
than being fast. This circuit more than any other I learned to go quick by
racing rather than hot-lapping.

That's definitely flat, but I seem to turn-in very early (as in, Ohmigod,
I'm going to hit the kerb) and then have lots of understeer all the way
through the corner.

I know what you mean. Again, I brake early to make sure I'm in control.

I'm not brave enough to delete my PB's. -0.54 is far too close for that!

if you can't go flat through the sweeper, then a change of setup could help
(I know setups aren't the savior, but if you're understeering through there,
a different setup could help).  It worked for me (but that's a Ferrari, I
don't know if the faster cars are supposed to be able to go flat through
there)

I myself found that running a 30 lap race in Brabham (basically just
coasting through just trying to stay on track) improved my skills at
Rouen tremendously. I managed a 2:00:66 lap during the closing stages of the
race and the day after managed to improve my Lotus PB by 1.5s after just
a couple of laps.

I guess driving around in the somewhat easier-to-handle Brabham opened
my eyes to driving lines and braking points. I've never really found
it easy to drive the Lotus the same way. Somehow the narrow torque band
just screams for braking too late and sliding through all the corners.

So take the Brabham for a spin. Atleast she knows how to behave
herself ;-)

You think the Brab is easier?  I'm not sure about that.  To me, it seems
narrower, and thus easier to spin.  How did it give you a better insight to
lines and braking points?

It might have been the lack of torque/HP that made the Brabham
easier for me. Or the fact that I wasn't actually pushing it to
the edge. Or it might have been a decent setup... Probably
the sum of all.

With Brabham I don't feel like I can "push" the car through
corners as I do with the Lotus. I had to find a way to maintain
speed through the corners because I actually felt I was going
slow if I didn't. In essence I had to drive properly.. Somehow
I'm just not able to set my mind that way when I'm in a Lotus..
Weird..
