NASCAR Heat -- Strange AI Stragety

by Cliff Brow » Mon, 25 Feb 2002 04:00:12

On advice from this newsgroup, I decided to give NASCAR Heat a try.  I
don't think the physics are quite up to GPL (although maybe it is just the
huge difference in cars) but it is quite fun.  Anyway, I was running a 50%
race against 100% opponets on *** mode at Rockingham and was able to
run in the 10-15 postion range.  Then a caution came out about 5 laps from
scheduled pit stops.  I pitted but the AI did not...they waited 5 laps and
pitted under green leaving me the only car on the lead lap.  It pretty
much ruined a good race.  I looked around a bit but did not find any fix
for this behavior.  Does anybody know of a fix for this?
Thanks,
Cliff

No fix available.  For actual racing, Heat stinks, especially in the
yellow area, on or offline.  Best to get N2002 to simulate a race.

Proper AI behaivor under yellows for Heat does not exist.  Probably the biggest single criticism of
it I have seen.

Thanks for the reply.  That's too bad that there is no fix.  I found all
kinds of cool loooking add ons and other for it.  I don't have nearly
enough computer for N2002.

Well, if you can run Heat half decent, you can do very close to the same
with N2002.  Maybe a bit less, but nothing dramatic I don't think.  Have you
tried the demo?

I run Heat with a small field (less than 16 cars) and most graphics turned
down/off.  I have not tried the N2002 demo but I did try Nascar 4. I was
able to drive it as long as all the graphics were down/off (indcluding the
draw ahead feature) and I was the only car on the track. I only have a P2
450 MHz and a Voodoo 5 graphics card so I did not expect a lot but that
low draw ahead drove me nuts and it would be nice to race at least one
other car.  Maybe next year I will be able to get a new system...

There are beta patches available and maybe another coming. Probably best to
turn off yellows in Heat. It's too bad about this because NH is very good
otherwise. At least in NH I can "feel" when another car bumps me or I bump
them. In N4/N2002 I get no such feedback through my FFB wheel. Physics may
not be quiet up to N2002, but they are not far off.
