Can ANYONE get a GPL car to handle worth a damn?????

by Col. Ling » Wed, 30 Sep 1998 04:00:00

I have tried and tried......
I cant find any setup files anywhere either.....
U know...I realize that old 60's F1 cars w/out wings or good ***
were squirrely beasts....but this is RIDICULOUS !!!!!!

Im sure the game's developers were trying to duplicate the realism of
the day....but this borders on being unplayable.....
Personally the game's appeal is waning a bit..........

Can someone tell me where i can get a setup or two ???
Or can someone post a few here???
Im not whining ...im just sick of this crap.......

At least your driving difficulties are due to car setup and your abilities.
What I did is slow the hell down when I needed to.  I had to get used to
the brakes etc.  The other ubi soft title, SpeedBusters, on the other hand,
is completely unplayable in my opinion, because of the game's controls
engine, and not because of car setup and user ability.

LOL. When do they understand that this IS a "sim", not just another NFS?

I can get it to drive decent. I am no great driver but you have to start
off slow and learn what your car is doing. It is really cool once you learn
to use the throttle and brake correctly. This has been my biggest learning
obstacle. I started off at Monza with the typical 2 minute plus lap times
because of course i wrecked but now after about 5 hours I am down to 1:34.
Now I know thats not really fast but I can see improvement. This is a model
of a real auto...remember you have 400 hp on tap in a 1100-1500 lb
car.....try to drive a hyundai with a vette motor in it and you will get
the idea. Yeah it is hard and therein comes the satisfaction when you start
to get control of one of these monsters. Stick with it....this is indeed
the best sim out there.

I have after some hours got the car to hold on pretty well.
May not be a HOT lap but managed a 1:35 at Monza
The demo cars setup is ***so don't expect to much. Drive
slower for a while and be smooth on the brakes.

I have the warez version (great, I can see the SPA snipers
setting up outside) and personally, I think the cars (in their default
setups) handle much like those in the original demo.  And I love it!
In this case, waiting for changes in the final version may not be the
solution (although it is always advisable).  If Col. Lingus finds it
difficult to handle the cars, then perhaps he should find another
game.  I hope the previous sentence didn't sound too elitist.

Mind you, I will be buying the game the day it is released!

Good advice, I also only have the demo.... done a 1m33 at Monza
and a 1m11 at the Glen, it ain't easy, but well worth the effort.  GPL
is a major step forward in race car sims.  I eagerly await the full
version.

>> I have tried and tried......

I hear ya Lingus, but it is very possible to control these cars, it
just takes a little getting used to. I consider myself a pretty big
racing sim fan and it struck me the same way at first, I was like,"
holy crap, you've got to be kidding me..." but then I realized that a
lot of it was about balancing the car, and using the throttle to
control your slides around turns. Listen to the combination of your
throttle and the tire squeal,, from what I've heard the 'squeal' is
there to mimic the g-force feeling you would get in real life. After a
while it has come to be really, really fun for me. And I'm using a
cheesy joystick on top of it all... and I stay on the track pretty
often ,,, ha
Since this sim is intended to portray a totally different era in
racing, it makes sense that it won't be like what we're used to,, and
I also think it's not better than the other sims, but definitely
completely different. hang in there, it'll all click sooner than you
think!

Yes, I have the warez version; yes, warez is bad and evil and causes
gum disease and impure thoughts and Communism and high interest rates
and bad TV reception and  starvation and global warming and ... ; yes,
I'm going to buy the game the day it comes out. With *that* nonsense
aside (although some goober's STILL gonna preach at me, I'll bet),
here are a few of my findings:

I've gotten the best results by driving a few laps and checking the
tire temps. The default setup seems to have too little tire pressure
so the inside and outside of the tire heat up more than the middle.
You'll have to make BIG camber changes, too (check the asymmetrical
editing box). Also, try adding some rear bump and decreasing rear
rebound a little. These few things got me around Spa at least 15
seconds faster than with the default setup. Can't remember the time
right now, but it was around 3:40. Not a hot lap, I know, but my best
so far. The main thing was that it made the car much more pleasant to
drive and easier to learn, and the drifts were infinitely easier to
induce and to control.

That Col. Lingus sure is a cunning linguist  :)
