I was in a N4 race the other day. Good clean field. Turned out to be a fun
race.

My point...it was a fixed set up race. The difference in lap times  were
kind of strange. Pole and the first few guys were almost two seconds per lap
better than the rest of the field. If everyone is using the same set up why
does it often happen like this? Guys were talking about how talented some of
the guys were. OK..but from pit row they just blow on by. Is it they have
better hardware thus making the cars quicker. where is the advantage then if
there is any at all? This race turned out to be clean and fun but they are
mysterious(fixed set ups) at times.

There's no mystery about any of this... speed is not directly related to
setup. Speed is related, however, directly related to how well you use your
car and the track. People who are talented enough to take the car to edge of
the performance envelope for those settings and track conditions (i.e. are
able to drive "the footprints") will come out on top, no matter whether
everyone's using a great, standard or bad setup.

In this respect I'm always reminded of my buddy Alex' words when he was in
national Formula Ford: "It's pretty easy to get within a couple of seconds
of the top times... getting down to just a couple of 10ths or even
surpassing them is the hard part."

Well there we go again multiple posts by yours truly (my isp news is messed
up). anyhow...

I was really referring to N4 and I did not want to start anything because I
did not mean cheating. I will follow maddawg and mess with the steering to
try to adjust some of those fixed set ups.

I just happen to do some thinking out loud to this group (which I enjoy
reading and posting to) after a fixed set up race. Appreciate your thoughts
:o)
