There is an Aussie race track which would be unbelievable in GPL (or any
other sim for that matter). It's about 6km long, with a 2 km straight and
very steep in places - top to bottom 170 m. Every foreign driver to go to
Bathurst for the annual 1000km race has been in awe but generally loved it.

Mr Noonan, I hope you have this on your list of things to do... Trouble is
that it never did host a GP. Too dangerous? The touring cars do a lot of
damage to the scenery every year...

You're not the first one with this idea, seems Bathurst is one of the
most wanted tracks for GPL. Besides a banked Monza, my favorite track
for GPL was Laguna Seca.
Thanks to the converter I've got it :)

I've driven the track in my once beloved XW-GT, I've got videos of
races from around 68 to 74 and I really did appreciate the patience
and skill one must have to drive this circuit for hours on end in a
car that wasn't designed well to take corners (let alone the big
dipper - If you've ever driven it, the road just dissapears under your
bonnet)

Would love to see this circit modelled in a sim that has at least half
decent physics.

Cheers,
Rod.

It did host a GP, in fact, Tony.
The Oz GP was held there several times back in the "olden days".  It's also
hosted races for the Australian Gold Star championship.
No international GP or Tasman Cup races, unfortunately.

This circuit is generally considered one of the most challenging road
circuits today. It would, indeed, make a brilliant add-on for GPL.

I've driven around it in a road car at legal speed - there are some bits
where you can't see properly over the bonnet because it drops off so quick.
I suppose that makes it difficult to model?

Tony,

I've seen some excellent bumpercam laps of the circuit but don't have
any on tape...

But I feel it's a circuit only a person that has driven it a number of
times could capture the feel of. TV coverage doesn't show how steep
some of those corners really are.

If your lap was anything like mine (and I'm a revhead of the highest
degree) you hit the anchors right before the big dipper... how they
ever got those 70's V8's taking that at 80kph+ has me in awe, couldn't
understand why the cars were lurching and leaning so badly through
that dip until I drove it ;O

Cheers,
Rod.

The SCGT track editors have a Mt Panorama Bathurst track in the beta
testing stage.  You can find some screen shots at gtinsider.com I
think.  It looks very good.

The closest I have seen it on a sim is when someone released a track
for GP2. It is great to be able setup for a race around the track.
Although GP2 may not have the physics, it is a total rush through the
dipper and blast down the straight and continue flat out at the kink.

The track they did was very good and you do get the impression that
you are climbing up the "mountain".

I'd like to drive Laguna Seca too, how is the Corkscrew??? The Dipper
at Bathurst is very similar, apparently not quite as steep though. The
difference is that the rest of Bathurst beats Laguna Seca hands down!!

We can always dream, right? Bathurst in GPL? Please?

Build Time      : about two days

* Other information *

 Features:
  -  Extensive use of the newly understood scenery commands.
  -  Object editing...
The crane (turn 1 Interlagos) is now reshaped and retextured
into being the light posts down the start/finish straight.
Advert boards reshaped and retextured into large trees, such as at
     turn 1 of this track.
Small white building (marshal posts?) enlarged and retextured into
     a more useful building.
  -  Hopefully accurate heights (as judged by many viewings of the 1997
video) and reasonable facsimiles of the armco adverts used.
  -  Camera positions as used by television Ch10.

Yes this circuit is real, not fictional.

Usually, some Australian Touring cars teams show up for the
Nurburgring 24h to get their share of "in awe but generally loved it".
;-)

Bathurst is interesting, but: it has never hosted a GP, and is still
in use for touring car racing, so it's not really a "Grand Prix
Legend". >;->

IMHO, some other tracks should be done first, and I support of course
my home track: the Solitude, a former race track in the forests
partially within the city limits of Stuttgart, Germany.
In the 1950s to mid 60s, several german Motorcycle GPs were hosted
there, plus non-championship F1 races with Clark, Gurney and others.
Huge spectator crowds showed up, 400000 people and more.
A real Grand Prix Legend. ;-)
It's a shame that the younger generation of the local population (like
me) does not know anything about the Solitude race track anymore. The
much safer Hockenheim took over, and the Solitude was used as public
road only.
The track is 11.4 km long and has 45 turns. The Esses in the puzzling
Mahdental section (17 turns in a row) were described by Phil Hill as
being harder to memorize than the whole Nordschleife.
The Solitude features a tight Exmuehle-like turn, followed by a steep
uphill climb named "Misery". As the track has not only ups, but downs
as well, the total elevation difference adds up to 123m. ;-)
Plus a very fast section on top of the hill, which is about 4km long.
The final straight through the forest leads into downhill sweeps. With
the biggest part of the crowd being there in a stadium-like valley,
the whole experience was similar to that of the Motodrom in
Hockenheim.

See http://www.bawue.de/~matthead/solitude/  for some maps, pictures,
parts of the 1962 program etc.

OK then what about the shortened Adelaide track for the Clipsal race
next weekend?
Especially since the BRM's, Coopers, Ferrari's, Brabham's and Lotus's
will be racing again,
with of course Sir Jack Brabham.

For those who don't know, yes, this is real.
The main event for most is the V8 touring cars, but the Formula One cars
from the GPL era
also race on both days. Yes, RACE not a parade lap. Sir Jack is also
there. In fact last year
was the only time in his entire racing career was he forced to retire
due to a shunt.
I will be there with my camera this year, especially since Jack will be
back in a '67 Brabham.
I'm so e***d to see an actual live GPL race!!!
http://www.racesimcentral.net/'ll
get the programme and publish
the actual cars that will be competing.
