I tried selecting 3Dfx, but it doesn't stick. The sky is just a big box...

I've got a Diamond770 Viper w/32 megs...

u don't have a 3dfx card
so why would u choose 3dfx?
u need to download the open GL patch from www.papy.com

My experience with applying the patch to the demo is that it renders
the demo almost unplayable.  This is a problem related to the protocol
used to produce the reflections in the mirrors.  Maybe someone else
here could offer a fuller explanation.

...which isn't a 3dfx card. There is an OPenGL patch at www.papy.com ,
but frankly it's far from perfect. If you can afford it, get a 3dfx
card - even a Voodoo1 will look far better than software, which is what
you're getting now.

I was under the impression that the patch didn't work with the demo.
Get the game, you won't regret it. The problem may be in finding it,
but when you do it will probably be cheap. Your Viper card will work
very well with gpl with a patch and a tweak.

Might be an idea to check out Rehan Ali's column on GPL at
GamesDomain.  Overall, it's a rave.  He does, however, point out that
simply applying the patch does not solve the graphics issues on
non-3dfx and Rendition cards.

Just got my copy of GPL and am not even going to bother attempting to
make it work with OpenGL drivers.  Simpler just to drop in an old
Rendition card (or a newer Voodoo) when it comes time to spend time
sailing into the ditch.  :)

I've got the creative version of the same card.  I downloaded the 1.2 Patch
for the full version - installed it and had errors, got the OpenGL patch -
installed it 2 and had errors.  I then reinstalled the demo and it worked
fine.

I uninstalled the demo and -- surprise! -- the demo would not
reinstall.  Not sure what the problem is, but not convinced I am
willing to take the time to track it down.  GPL is beginning to feel
as difficult to manage as a program as are the cars it models.

I tried the demo on my 600Mhz Athlon + GeForce DDR and it ran at maybe
1-2fps with lots of the details turned off. That is when it didn't lock up.
It looked and played like one of the worst driving games I've ever seen in
my entire life. I hope the real version, once the DirectX patch is applied,
is worlds different.
Perhaps this demo was one reason that the game sold so poorly.

I finally got the demo to reinstall and made sure the OpenGL patch was
in place.  All I got for my trouble was an unusable mouse.  Which is a
problem since the demo requires a mouse for its setup.  I was able to
play the first install of the demo in software mode -- which is really
ugly -- and now I cannot even get the demo to load.  And the OpenGL
dll will not let me delete it!  Amazing!

The real issue here is that the guys at Papyrus bet on the wrong horse
when it came to graphic acceleration.  And keeping their sim alive
requires, for some of us, a separate video card and set of drivers.  I
already have two video cards.  GPL makes it three.  And GPL is the
only thing I have that absolutely requires Voodoo.  Just getting to
the point of getting this thing on its feet is arduous.  I can't wait
to spend months learning how to crawl around all the tracks.

I mean, OpenGL patch.
At $15, it's not exactly the hugest gamble though.

If you already have a Voodoo card great, but,
you do NOT NEED a Voodoo card. GPL runs great on TNTs.

Trust me, whatever you have to do is worth it, and it's really not
that hard. Get the game and upgrade to version 1.2 with a free patch,
it's rock solid.

Your right there, but at the time when most other pieces of software would
be loosing your interest, you'll be getting so deep into gpl it will be
ruining your life. Sounds great eh ?  Honestly, I've got more entertainment
for my money with gpl than I've had from the last 10 purchases.

Let's be specific here.  "Runs great on TNTs."  The demo didn't run so
great and I have a AGP Graphics Blaster 16MB.  (The demo looked great
-- once -- but everything else, including the mouse, was either
hopelessly slow or outright frozen.)  I tried uninstalling the demo
while leaving the OpenGL patch in place and then reinstalling the demo
and it was completely pants.  I had to go back to a DOS boot partition
just to clear things out.

Rehan Ali of Games Domain, while quite impressed with GPL, pointed out
that the OpenGL patch alone does not get around the mirror problem.
(10fps***pit, 30fps replay)   I have an ancient Intergraph Reactor
with a Verite 1000 chip that has never been out of the box.  Might
that be a better choice than either the patch or a newer Voodoo card?

Ok, got the GPL demo... no graphic acceleration ?

It depends if the Rendition card is first or 2nd gen.  The Intergraph
was one of the first Rendition cards out there.  I'm not really sure if
it will handle gpl all that well.
There are some added tweeks you can do to get your TNT runner better
for GPL, but the real best solution is one of the V3 3dfx Voodoo cards.
If you can find one at an auction or other discount, you'll probably pay
less than 100 dollars (us)
Keep in mind the newest 3dfx card, the V5 5500, is due out by mid May
and many many current 3dfx users will be flooding EBAY and other web
sellers with offers to buy thier used vid card.

Maybe this will help sort things out: The Reactor came with an Indy
Car II demo.  (I assume if GPL runs well on a system that can run Indy
Car II, I'm home free, right?  Maybe?)  As for which generation it is,
it's the V1000 chip and not the V2100 or V2200.
