Great GP3 news.

Apparantley from official sources (go to www.gamespot.co.uk to read the
article) comes the news that GP3 will have force-feedback afterall, and
there's a quote from GC there to back it up, so it looks genuine enough.
Also www.alphaf1.com/gp3 have a load of new screenshots which look well
impressive, from Hungaroring.  Also Microprose say July 28th is definite and
they will start printing the CD's before the end of the month.
At last GP3 is within reach.

GP3 sounds like another Crammond half a game

Ah, but take a look at http://www.alphaf1.com/gp3 and look at the news
item "updated feature list". Scroll down and see "what's to come in
future versions"
They've had 4 years to put some of this stuff in and just haven't
bothered...

From what I've read recently it seems that GP3 has very few people working
on it.  Simergy is apparently only four people, with a further 20 people
from Microprose helping with the periphery of the game.  Simergy is doing
the whole simulation and 3d engine themselves, and that means Geoff Crammond
is basically writing the "core simulation" himself (maybe someone can
correct this if it's wrong).
Compare this with the credits for GPL and you'll see why GP3 has taken so
long.  Personally, in Geoff's position, I would have used the profits from
GP2 to expand Simergy because it's just taking too long to get products onto
the market.  We will only see on July 28th whether GP3 is still up with the
competition, but Geoff risks falling behind in the future if he continues to
insist on being a loan coder on the physics and 3d engine.  As the GP series
continues to increase in sophistication and realism, the projects will take
more and more man hours to complete.  I hope Geoff has this in mind.

There's something amusing about the way they phrased this:
"Ability to look left or right from***pit view just like in many other sims"

This would be an interesting feature:
"Starting driving career as a test driver and then moving to better teams"

Because I've been wondering which team a rookie scrub would be
most likely to get a car with.  In F1 2000 I've been driving the Prost as
Alesi's teamate.  It just doesn't feel realistic to kick Schumacher
out of his Ferrari.   From the manual comments I suppose I should
start with Minardi.

I tried to do that too, but talks with the new team during the silly season
broke down.  I wanted too much money, & sole use of the spare car, etc., and
I simply couldn't see eye-to-eye with myself.  "I'm asking wayyyyy too much
for a guy who's still wet behind the ears," I thought, as I looked, steely
eyed, across the table at myself.

Things were a bit sour around the house for a few days after that--I and
myself weren't on speaking terms, and took to avoiding each other at social
functions.

I did this with the original Grand Prix....started with a back-marker and
after  completed a season, promoted myself to a better team!
If I recall correctly, there was "talk" leading up to the release of GP2
that such a career mode would be included, but it was not to be.
I will be delighted if such a feature forms part of GP3....a nice little
piece of "icing" on the cake.

Rather than concern myself about falling behind in the future, if I were
Crammond Esq. I'd be concerning myself about which Caribbean island I would
be relocating to.
There I could poke away at GP4, GP5, to my heart's content, happy in the
knowledge that anyhing with the words "GPx" and "Geoff Crammond" attached to
them would continue to make my existence pretty damn comfortable! :-)

Let someone else worry about staffing levels!

I know what it's like, David.  These conversations I keep having with myself

But GP3 is just like GP2 in that any marque the player choses will
perform the same.  So joining the "dog-team" of F1 will provide you as
the player with the same car as the "top-dog-team".

How many of those in the GPL credits were programmers (physics or
graphics)?
Believe me, one or two guys are often more productive than 20+ in
developing
a medium sized project, esp. if they can concentrate on the e.g. the
physics
engine.

For me, that is immaterial, Michael.
If I start with a lowly-ranked team, irrespective of the fact that all cars
are the same, and I fail to deliver the goods then I do not "promote"
myself.
It is no different to racing in a one-class situation no matter what the
sport is, be it motor-racing or yacht racing.

Besides that fact, my imagination takes care of the rest.
