oops ... I of course meant upload and download speeds -- not "link."  Still
need advice, though ...

DSL service just became available in my area.  The only service that I
can afford is one that provides a higher downlink speed (768 Kbps) than
uplink speed (384 Kbps).  My main interest in DSL is for online racing
-- my modem just doesn't cut it.  Does anyone have experience with this
type of DSL?  Will it work for racing online, or will the differing
uplink and downlink speeds cause problems?  Thanks for any advice.

All the high speed home services, cable included, have slower upload than
down load speeds. I have recently switched from cable to DSL. Cable only
occasionally gave anywhere near their advertised up/down speeds, and had
recently become plagued with latency spikes and speed drops that made it
useless for GPL.

My DSL service has a bit faster down load speed than yours, but similar up
load speed. It is rock solid, and great for hosting GPL. You should be able
to host a full field with the speeds you mentioned. See Bart Westra's page
for more details:

Yeh same here . I  have 1.5mg/sec dl speed and .384 upload DSL speed. You will
have no trouble running online with that speed or to host a decent size race.

This is simply not true.  ADSL (Asynchronous DSL) has differing download/upload
speeds; however, SDSL (Synchronous Digital Subcriber Line... and also known as
XpressDSL) has the same (synchronous) download/upload speeds.  I recently
upgraded from 56K dialup to 768Kbps SDSL, which means my download AND upload is
768 kilo-bits per second (notice it's bits, not bytes... many people say this
incorrectly).  Needless to say the equal high rate for download and upload
makes for excellent hosting capabilities!  The down-side is that the SDSL
offerings don't get as high of download speed as ADSL or cable offer.  But for
my purposes, I'd rather have a smooth race online than download files
quicker... :-)

I agree.   How much is your SDSL?  Where are you?

DSL and Online Racing?

Brian,

I am 20 miles north of Pittsburgh, PA in a town called Gibsonia.  My phone company
is North Pittsburgh Telephone Company, and my ISP is Stargate Industries.  I paid
$100 in order for NPTCO to program SDSL(XpressDSL) on my line and for the modem
(Paradyne MVL modem).  I saved the $95 modem/network card installation fee by
installing them myself.  I bought the network card seperately (less than $25).
Stargate waived their $25 setup fee (since I was already a Stargate customer).
NPTCO charges $39.95/mo for the SDSL service, and Stargate charges an additional
$10/mo for internet account (waived the $10 fee for the first 3 months).

Summary... $100 setup, $39.95/mo for first 3 months, $49.95/mo thereafter.

I recently upgraded my home network from a 10Mbps Hub/Nics to Fast Ethernet Switch
(100Mbps, no bandwidth sharing) and Nics.  I use W98 ICS (Internet Connection
Sharing) over TCP/IP and it works very well.  Only thing I'm worried about at this
point is hackers getting into my network.  I've read somewhere that I can share
files over NetBui (instead of TCP/IP) and have a little more security on my internal
machines, but short of installing a firewall of some sort I don't know how else to
prevent hackers.

Plus, you wouldn't have to worry about tying up your phone line in the
meantime...
