Keep the brake depressed whilst the game is loading, go into the conmtroller
configuration screen (keeping the brake depressed), select the brake option,
assign the key command it asks for and then when it asks for the controller
input release the brake. This should assign it to R+ (or R- can't quite
remember which off the top of my head..). Now back out of the options
screen, then go back in and select the brake option again, select the key
command once more and this time when it asks for your controller input press
the brake. It should now show up as R- (or R+ depending on what you got the
last time...). This should now have the game set up for split axis...
Hope this works for you too.

Peter Hooper
PS:- Sorry i'm a bit late responding, decided to have a day away from the
computer for a change.
