The sound's not that bad with the volume turned way up, or with
earphones, but there is a patch coming out within a week or so that
will include new sound package that's MUCH better (I'm running the new
sounds now).
Both the demo and the full version come with a DTR server utility and a
version of GameSpy Lite -- the server utility allows you to host as a
local server, and GameSpy Lite allows you to find other servers on the
Web.
It IS a $20 game -- it's suggested retail was $19.99 the day it hit the
shelves, so it's not being discounted. Wizard Works is a value-
oriented division of GT Interactive, and their titles are aimed at the
lower-cost end of the spectrum. Aside from the fact that the full
version has no replay feature, nothing's missing to speak of. Visible
damage is included (SCGT didn't have this out of the box), you can save
multiple setups (another thing lacking from SCGT), the AI difficulty is
adjustable (a feature GPL left out), and the realism (physics) level
can be adjusted from arcade to full realism, which is up there with
Viper Racing and GPL (this adjustability is something else that got
left out of GPL). So, for $19.99, DTR may be THE best value ever -- it
offers a high level of realism, tons of fun, and it even has some
features that other, higher-priced sims lack. There is no replay
feature, so you can't re-watch races (or marvel at that great pass over
and over again), but other than that, DTR is pretty complete.
