DTR - Release vs. demo

by Doug Gordo » Tue, 07 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I tried the demo and actually thought it was a lot of fun. Pretty
realistic "physics" as far as car handling & sliding is concerned. The
only really bad thing was the sound -- didn't even sound like a car at
all to me. Does the released version have acceptable sound to it?

Also, what is the method of on-line play -- do you have to use
centralized servers, or can anyone host ala GPL? If the latter, how do
people find each other?

One thing that bothers me a bit is that this game is already selling
for less than $20, which makes it seem like something's missing. OTOH,
I only paid $30 for GPL and it has been worth 100's of hours of play.

The sound's not that bad with the volume turned way up, or with
earphones, but there is a patch coming out within a week or so that
will include new sound package that's MUCH better (I'm running the new
sounds now).

Both the demo and the full version come with a DTR server utility and a
version of GameSpy Lite -- the server utility allows you to host as a
local server, and GameSpy Lite allows you to find other servers on the
Web.

It IS a $20 game -- it's suggested retail was $19.99 the day it hit the
shelves, so it's not being discounted.  Wizard Works is a value-
oriented division of GT Interactive, and their titles are aimed at the
lower-cost end of the spectrum.  Aside from the fact that the full
version has no replay feature, nothing's missing to speak of.  Visible
damage is included (SCGT didn't have this out of the box), you can save
multiple setups (another thing lacking from SCGT), the AI difficulty is
adjustable (a feature GPL left out), and the realism (physics) level
can be adjusted from arcade to full realism, which is up there with
Viper Racing and GPL (this adjustability is something else that got
left out of GPL).  So, for $19.99, DTR may be THE best value ever -- it
offers a high level of realism, tons of fun, and it even has some
features that other, higher-priced sims lack.  There is no replay
feature, so you can't re-watch races (or marvel at that great pass over
and over again), but other than that, DTR is pretty complete.

The sounds will be fixed in a patch to be released probably near the end of
this week - after a bit of getting used to them the sounds aren't quite as
bad as I originally thought.... a bit tinny - but rather realistic.  Other
issues addressed in the patch should be multiplayer features.
The $19.99 is the original MSRP for the title - WHAT A BARGAIN!
I got $20 worth of fun the first day I had it.
