Microprose is EVIL (How to I delete Directx7?)

What a bunch or sick bastards. Who the hell said you could install the
Directx7 virus on my computer? NONE of my games work anymore, my
frame-rate has been slaughtered all over the god damn place. I'm not
only swearing off buying Microprose games, I'll never install another
Microprose demo, unless there is a letter of apology with assurances
this will NEVER happen again, from someone VERY high up in Microprose.
What an absolute disgrace.

Does anyone know how to clean this abomination off of my Wiundows98
system? I got a utility for resetting version numbers from one site,
but it wants to find a "Directx.INF" file which I can't find anywhere
on my system. Any help would be much appreciated.

Is there any way to force a DX 61 reinstall? Please help.

Are you sure DX7 is at fault. I for one have it installed and every game I
have works fine, including GPL, SCGT, N3, etc.

Same here as the poster below.  DX7 is humming along just fine.  No
slowdowns, loss of frame-rate etc.  This happens every time a new
version of DX comes out unfortunately.  For whatever reason, some
systems just fall all  to pieces.    I think the solution is to install
the dx7, then re-install your audio and video drivers.  Then if all else
fails, re-install the games themselves.
I don't know what vid card you are using, but 3dfx has just released
drivers specifically for dx6 OR dx7.  Good luck

Joe,

Not in my experience, I had a problem with EAW which I thought was
caused by DX7( it wasn't). So I tried to uninstall it using a well
tried procedure. Re installed DX 6.1 but got loads of errors so went
back to 7. No further problems, DX 7 is the best version yet.

Yes, several games are all choppy for me under dx7 (Voodoo2 12MB
graphics). Finally got 6.1 back, and everything's normal again.

Hi, fellow SOS & DX7 victim!

<snip>

I think, you speak of the proggy, some nice guy mentioned in response to my
DX7 rant 'SOS !!! I hate those Micro's...'. I still haven't tried it, but as
far as I understood, they mean the DirectX.INF file, which comes with the DX
6.1 installation. My DX 6.1 installation is an .exe file, which is in fact a
self-extracting archive. You can view/extract it with WinZip and find the
file in it.
The reason why I still haven't tried it is, that they say you must make a
Win98 reinstall to get some original files back, which were overwritten by
DX7. Since I don't trust Microsoft enough to expect that my system will
still be working after this, I first have to do a lot of archiving to
prepare for an 'emergency-reformatting'.
But if you try the proggy, *please* let me know, how it worked, I'll do the
same, if I try it first!

I tried it, and it worked for me, thank goodness. The trick is that
the INF file might not be named "Directx.INF". Mine was caled
"dx6migr.INF".

Worst case is you would have to boot up off the Winodws 98 boot disk
and reinstall from DOS to put you back to the 6.1.
Try getting the drivers for the Video card first.
There is no way Microsoft can test every system configuration.

>There is no way Microsoft can test every system configuration.

Then they should provide a more reasonable uninstall solution. But
given that they don't, it is simply incompetent for any developer to
"upgrade" the DX drivers without asking for user confirmation. No ifs
ands or buts about it.

Who said so? Anyone who blindly follows Mordorsofts "ugrade or
you won't get fed" policy has only him/herself to blame.

Yeah, it's called Linux. *And* you're safe from Microsoft Products
(and probably Microprose to some good extent) forever onwards ;-)

Hmm, I'd try the usual dx uninstall, followed by a thorough
wipe of the registry using regedit, looking for traces of leftover
dx references (which will be numerous and tough to track, I'm sure).

Otherwise, and if you value your time, just go on and re-install
Windows and wait for the next major ***up.

Regards & good luck,

Uwe

Forever? Hm, my guess is Microsoft will jump on the Linux boat late,
but not late enough. They'll mess this system up as well with some
utilities, but thank God hopefully they won't deal with the kernel.
Althought MS did Xenix a long time ago.

Try this to get rid of directx.  It will get rid
of the lot & you can install the one you want then.

What race driving sims are available for Linux?

An OS for me, is only as useful as the software it will run.  If I want to run
GPL, Viper Racing, Re-volt, Dirt Track Racing, Midtown Madness, Monster Truck
Madness, Linux obviously isn't an option.

I have run Linux, it's great, but the software I want to run only runs on
Windows98 right now.

I'll probably be running windows 2000 in a few months if it will run my games.
