GPL New version of bandwidth patch

by Bart Westr » Tue, 28 Aug 2001 06:52:59

Hi

I have made a new version of the GPL bandwidth patch. Enhancements are:

*  Support for GPL 1.2.0.2 (Cpu fix)
*  Morecars patch and cars behind patch combined in one program
*  Program can undo and redo the patches, and show which patches are present
*  Added two examples to show the effect the patch can have

If you have the current version of the patch working (more cars patch and/or
cars behind patch), there is no need to re-apply as the patch code itself
has not changed. The new program will show the presence of the old patches.

You find the patch here: http://www.racesimcentral.net/~westrab/gpl.htm#bw

I am a few days late on this re: question but does this patch have
a positive affect if you have CPUs lower then the 1.3-1.4gig type?

benefit for me to use this patch? Tia. Thom_j.

The papy cpu fix prevents errors with the pace at which GPL runs in >1.4G
cpu's. The error is caused by an integer overflowing and the solution in the
cpu fix is to enlarge (probably double) this integer. (Sorry Randy if I am
over-simplifying here.)
On <1.4G cpu's the integer does not overflow and it still won't when you
apply the cpu fix. The performance overhead of the enlarged integer is
neglectible so you may consider the fix neutral.

I had to update the bandwidth patches because the cpu fix moved some code
within GPL and changed some addresses. For pre-cpu fix gpl the bandwidth
patches have not changed at all. However the patch program is now a bit more
user friendly, it can show patch status and undo/redo the patches. Also
because of this it no longer makes backup copies of gpl.exe (abundant checks
are built in that must be passed before gpl.exe is actually changed).
The benefit of the bandwidth patch is that less cars will seem to spring
from nowhere in online races.
